South Carolina’s Only Living History B&B Is A Real Step Back In Time
South Carolina's own "Downton Abbey" is located in the Pee Dee and once you've seen this little taste of it, you'll probably need to visit! From the Edwardian style of this opulent bed and breakfast to the hands-on experiences you'll be afforded at this estate, you'll be swooning with love for the only living history bed and breakfast you'll find within the Palmetto State.
Built in 1893 as the W. J. Montgomery House, the property has retained much of the original features from days gone by. The current owners appear to take painstaking measures to ensure projects adhere to restoration values as opposed to modernizing additions. You'll love the decadent grounds as well as the main house itself.
From the moment you enter the main hallway, with its double arches and cross corridors, you know you've stepped into the past.
The guest rooms are exquisitely adorned and very spacious. The beds and other furnishings are quite lovely.
And the inn even offers one quest room suite.
Named "The Sisters Suite," it's quite roomy and very tastefully decorated. If this was "Downton Abbey," which sister do you think would have lived in this beautiful room? (Mary... of course!)
But enough of the PBS series talk... The Grove has much to keep you engaged and entertained during your stay - if that's what you want.
There are many hands-on activities involved in the daily upkeep of this unique B&B and you can help out, if you choose. Want to help gather the eggs for tomorrow's breakfast? Sure you do!
Aside from being a perfect romantic getaway for adults, this living B&B is also a great learning experience for kids. After fetching the eggs for breakfast you may be invited to help with soap making.
The property has many features and options for getting involved in the daily "chores" that keep the place running. The Joinery at The Grove creates original pieces of furniture, as well as repairing/restoring antiques from the property. You can watch or help.
The inn has the original servants kitchen intact - complete with a wood burning stove that's fired up each morning just in time for breakfast. Some breakfast items are even prepared in the servant's kitchen.
It's located in the original building not far from the main house. Want to watch, or even HELP make breakfast in that historic kitchen? I do!
You only need to ask. Someone made this delicious grape pie in the wood burning stove you see in the background of this photo. Yum!
Whether you're in search of a romantic getaway or a fun-filled and educational weekend for the whole family, The Grove at the Inn on Harlee is perfect for any occasion.
