The Castle Hill Inn is a historic Rhode Island treasure.

The original building was commissioned by marine biologist Alexander Agassiz in 1875, and it has quite a history.

The inn was used as a summer home for the family until the great hurricane of 1938, when the waters of Castle Hill beach and cove merged and cut off the peninsula from the mainland. Mrs. Maximillian Agassiz, Alexander's daughter-in-law, was too frightened to ever return.

During World War II, the property was used as as an impromptu naval base.

After the war, it was converted into a hotel, where it hosted celebrities like Grace Kelly and novelist Thornton Wilder.

While the hotel now has plenty of sleek, modern details, it still retains a historic -- and haunted-- charm.

It seems as if the renovations have not deterred the spirits.

Staff and guests alike have reported seeing the ghost of a woman wandering through the halls at night.

She is thought to be the spirit of a member of the Agassiz family.
