You Can Stay Overnight in a Frank Lloyd Wright House in Acme, Pennsylvania
Staying the night in a home designed by the iconic architect is the stuff of dreams—but it's possible right here in Pennsylvania.
Traveling means finding a comfortable place to sleep at night, but long gone are the days of having choices limited to hotels, motels, and B&Bs. Today, we have an abundance of unique accommodations that can make a trip unforgettable. You might want to stay, for example, at this Frank Lloyd Wright house in Pennsylvania.
Frank Lloyd Wright is perhaps best known in Pennsylvania for Fallingwater, an enchanting home in Mill Run that’s built over a waterfall. However, just over half an hour away in Acme, you’ll find Polymath Park, an architectural park dedicated to preservation.
It's home to a stunning collection of four homes—Mantyla House, Duncan House, Balter House, and Blum House—offering tours, immersive experiences, and overnight stays. Both Mantyla House and Duncan House were designed by Wright himself, while Balter and Blum are the works of Peter Berndtson, an apprentice of Wright's.
Originally crafted in Cloquet, Minnesota, Mantyla was deconstructed and then carefully moved to its current location at Polymath Park. Its stunning Grand Usonian design will stop you in your tracks. The home sleeps up to four guests, with three bedrooms and two baths.
Whether you have an eye for interior design or architectural history, you'll relish the chance to admire every detail of this one-of-a-kind build, which will quickly feel like a second home. It's important to note, however, that there are a few special conditions to consider.
Because it is a historic home, you won’t be able to smoke, burn candles, or have an open flame within 50 feet of it. You’ll have a kitchen with a microwave, but the stove and oven cannot be used. Due to the historical nature of the home, all guests must be at least 13 years old.
Duncan House was built in Illinois in 1957 and remained there for decades. In 2007, it was dismantled and relocated to Polymath Park in Western Pennsylvania to save it from destruction. It was meticulously rebuilt and today welcomes guests for tours and overnight stays. Duncan House also comfortably sleeps a maximum of four guests, all of whom must be at least 13 years old. The home has three bedrooms and two baths. The same regulations about smoking, candles, and open flame apply to this property.
Stays are capped at three nights. If you plan to stay several nights, be aware that tours are held during the day. You can remain in the house during the tours if you choose. Plan a tour of Polymath Park’s other two homes, and don't forget to indulge in a delicious meal at Treetops Restaurant, right there at the park. Much more than your average restaurant, this culinary destination offers diners an immersive experience in nature that's nothing short of delightful. Take a peek at a sample Treetops Restaurant menu for a glimpse of what you can expect.
