I Visited This A-Frame Campground in Asheville, North Carolina, and Fell in Love
Discover the charm of Wrong Way Campground, a cozy A-frame retreat in Asheville, North Carolina, and how visiting supports the community’s recovery after Hurricane Helene.
It's no secret that Asheville had a difficult year last year. In September 2024, Hurricane Helene caused severe devastation throughout North Carolina, especially in Asheville. Catastrophic flooding from the French Broad River, which rose over 21 feet, inundated the River Arts District, damaging buildings and artwork from over 300 artists. The historic Biltmore Estate also temporarily closed due to flood damage, reopening in November as a sign of recovery.
Recovery efforts are ongoing, with officials estimating it could take five years to fully restore infrastructure and livelihoods. Despite the challenges, Asheville’s residents are showing resilience, supported by visitors who contribute to the local economy and aid recovery by engaging with the city’s businesses, art, and culture.
I was lucky enough last year to visit Asheville, celebrating a birthday in the harsh cold of winter. My respite? An A-frame campground that is open today, encouraging guests to come stay and support the local economy and community. Here is why Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins will always be my go-to accommodation in Asheville.

Pulling up to Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins, I was thrilled that this wasn't a cookie-cutter accommodation. The A-frame cabins are perched on stilts, with parking for each cabin underneath. Once I had my assigned cabin, I parked underneath and took the flight of stairs up to the top where the entry doors were. Each cabin came with a code for the door, so I didn't even need to check in at the front desk - everything was given to me via email before I arrived.

Inside the cabins, the accommodations are modern with a warm aesthetic. Think of a desert haven in the middle of the mountains. There were live plants, tons of books to get lost in, and even a record player with some vintage vinyls ranging from Elvis all the way to jazz great Miles Davis.
It was spacious inside, with enough room for two people comfortably. There is an option if you have three guests for a pull-out sofa. But for two, the accommodations were great. There was even a small patio with two chairs that allowed you to sit outside and across the street watch the river roll on by.

The main lodge was probably one of my favorite aspects of the property. There was a fireplace inside with tables, chairs, and games. There was a shop, too, where you could buy Wrong Way merchandise and other things to brighten up your stay. I grabbed some marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers to use by the outdoor firepit, which is also a community meeting spot. The shop in the lodge also features local baked good, food items, and coffee!

Spending a night at Wrong Way was my chance to unwind while still having access to Asheville’s charm. While it wasn't warm enough to enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding on the river or hiking nearby trails, I did get to head into the city with ease to experience Asheville’s renowned breweries, restaurants, and arts scene.
Visiting Asheville after a hurricane is vital to supporting the local community and economy. Natural disasters can significantly impact tourism-dependent areas like Asheville, leading to lost income for small businesses, artists, and service workers. By dining at local restaurants, shopping at independent stores, and booking stays at places like Wrong Way Campground, you contribute directly to recovery efforts. Your visit helps keep businesses open, sustain jobs, and preserve Asheville’s unique cultural and economic vibrancy.
