The Most Famous Hotel In Montana Is Also One Of The Most Historic Places You’ll Ever Sleep

The Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton, Montana, offers a historic and charming stay with modern amenities and riverfront views.

It comes as no surprise that Montana's oldest and longest operating hotel is in Fort Benton. Known as the Birthplace of Montana, Fort Benton is full of historic sites and monuments.

The Grand Union Hotel has been around since 1882, and it's Montana's most famous historic hotel. And if you've ever spent some time here, you know it's a fantastic place to stay.

The Grand Union Hotel, which overlooks the Missouri River, is a historic treasure.

Many a Montanan has spent a night or two here or enjoyed a riverfront meal during their travels.

Built at the height of Fort Benton’s prosperity (thanks to the Missouri River's steamboat era), this place was once declared the finest hotel between St. Louis and Seattle.

In fact, over 300 guests attended the hotel's grand opening. This included some of the most prominent men and women in our history.

Of course, the property has been lovingly renovated more than once, so it's nice and modern now.

Still, you'll still see plenty of the original historic touches paying homage to Montana's past. The hotel currently features 26 guest rooms and suites, many of which have river views.

When you're hungry, head to the Union Grille for a delicious dinner.

The restaurant is open Wednesday - Sunday in the winter and Wednesday - Monday in the summer. The restaurant closes down every January for a major deep cleaning and maintenance to ensure everything stays pristine.

Exploring Fort Benton is always a blast, but you can have a relaxing staycation without ever leaving the property.

When the weather allows, you can have your morning coffee or evening beverage right on the river.

The Grand Union Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it's also the recipient of several state and national restoration awards.

Staying here feels like going back in time in the best way.
