The Montana Airbnb With a Next-Level Hot Tub That Redefines Cozy Season
Looking for the best winter getaway in Montana? This vintage train car Airbnb checks all the boxes. It's quiet and secluded, offers a wide range of modern amenities, and features a hot tub overlooking the Missouri River. The snowy landscape looks like it belongs on a postcard.
What does winter mean to you? For me, it's all about introspection and slowing down. I usually put my New Year's goals and resolutions on hold until spring, using the colder months to set intentions rather than act on them. If that resonates with you, perhaps a cozy winter getaway in Montana is what you need.
The Riverside Historic Train Car in Cascade, a small town roughly 30 miles southwest of Great Falls and near Tower Rock State Park, is a restored Northern Pacific Railway Post Office train car. It offers a peaceful escape along the Missouri River, surrounded by snow-covered bluffs and lush evergreen trees. A hot tub overlooks the river, so you can enjoy a blissful soak amid the magical winter scenery.
The train car sleeps up to eight guests and features a primary bedroom with a queen-size bed, a second bedroom with two bunk beds, an additional sofa bed in the living room, and one full bath. Although it is a vintage coach, extensive renovations have given it a modern makeover. The space is bright and open, with many large windows that let sunlight stream in. Wood floors, leather seating, and clean lights create an air of sophistication that will make you feel like you're riding first-class during the railroad industry's heyday.
You'll feel right at home in the kitchen, which is equipped with a full range of updated appliances, including a side-by-side refrigerator and freezer, a stove/oven, a microwave, and a coffee pot. A dining table in the kitchen seats four, and the living area offers additional seating.
Railroad enthusiasts will appreciate that many of the train cars' original features have been preserved, including the hand brake wheel in the primary bedroom. The exterior door slides open, leading to the back deck, where the hot tub and patio are located.
While the train car is also worth a stay in the summer, when you can fish or swim in the Missouri River, there's something about the snowy landscape that's especially enchanting. At night, bundle up, make a steaming mug of coffee or hot cocoa, and head out onto the deck to stargaze as the brisk air invigorates you. Then, finish the evening with a relaxing soak in the hot tub underneath the winter sky. Mornings are just as memorable; the almost tangible stillness of the season lingers like a dense fog.
There is little to no cell service on the property, so keep that in mind before booking. However, if you can unplug for a bit, winter is, in my opinion, the best time. Nature slows down in the winter, so why shouldn't we follow suit? Take the opportunity to shut out all the noise, draw inward, and refocus on what truly matters.
