This Michigan Airbnb Has the Most Underrated Fishing Spot
This lakefront cottage on Leach Lake in Hastings, MI is perfect for a peaceful getaway. Enjoy fishing, sunset views, and easy access to a top-rated small town.
There’s something about being outdoors in Michigan that just hits different. Maybe it’s the way the woods smell like pine and wet dirt, or how every other road seems to lead to a lake you’ve never heard of but immediately want to dive into. You can spend the day hiking, biking, paddling, birdwatching, berry-picking, or pretending you know how to identify mushrooms. But for my money, the best way to spend time in nature is with a fishing rod in hand and absolutely nowhere else to be.
Take somewhere like Lake St. Clair: massive, popular, and packed with people hoping to reel in a story-worthy catch. But not everyone’s built for crowds and competitive dock politics. I remember fishing off my Papa’s dock in South Carolina, mostly hauling in crappies and bream that were barely longer than the worms I used to catch them. Still, I loved the thrill of the fight. Every catch felt like a tiny miracle... until the fish started flopping around on the dock and I’d panic, beg Papa to let me throw them back. He’d just laugh and shake his head while I tried to save them like a one-kid rescue squad.
If you dream of fishing without an audience or a waiting list for dock space—somewhere you can cast a line in total peace—I’ve got the Michigan vacation rental for you.
This lakefront Airbnb on Leach Lake in Hastings, Michigan, is a slice of quiet paradise. It’s a comfy, well-loved fishing cottage that’s been smartly updated, but still holds that vintage charm. The kind of place where mosquitoes respect your personal space (okay, not really, bring bug spray), and the dock is yours alone. Leach Lake is an all-sports lake, but it’s got the mellow vibe of a hidden gem. You’ll find paddle boards, kayaks, a rowboat, and a canoe waiting for you... and more importantly, fish practically waiting to be caught. Word on the water is you can catch your dinner right off the dock.
The cottage itself has everything you need for a relaxed stay. There’s a queen bed in the main bedroom, bunk beds and a toddler bed on the screened-in porch (ideal for night owls or pint-sized adventurers), and a futon in the living room. It’s got an open layout, so you’re never far from the snacks, and the recently updated kitchen and bathroom mean you can enjoy the rustic vibe without sacrificing modern comforts. Oh... and the outdoor shower? It’s built from an old boat. A BOAT. I’d write a poem about it if I could rhyme “shower” with anything good.
Outside, there’s a yard with space for kids to play, a sandy beach area for little ones to splash around, and a private dock and deck where you can park your boat or just sit and watch the sun call it a day. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget your phone somewhere inside and not care enough to retrieve it.
And when you feel like reconnecting with civilization, downtown Hastings is just a short drive away. It’s been named one of the best small towns in America for good reason, one being that it's home to the Thornapple River, one of Michigan's best lazy rivers. Grab lunch, tube the river, and enjoy the fact that you get to return to your own peaceful perch on the lake by sundown.
So here’s the plan: visit Michigan, go fishing, and stay at this angler's dream of a cottage. It’s everything your peaceful, outdoorsy, fishing-loving self didn’t know it needed.
Pro tip: Bring a floating strap for your sunglasses. I’ve seen too many favorite pairs vanish into lakes like they had unfinished business at the bottom. Let your stress sink, not your shades.
