Monroe, Louisiana, is in the northeastern part of the Pelican State. It's the ninth-largest city in Louisiana, and it has a population of nearly 50,000 residents. First founded as Fort Miro in the late 1700s, the city briefly changed its name to Monroe to commemorate the first arrival of the steamboat James Monroe in 1820, and the name stuck. It's been called Monroe ever since.

People love to visit Monroe to relax and enjoy the city and the beauty that surrounds it. It's a wonderful place for a getaway. It's a small city, but you'll still find plenty to do there - including activities like visiting the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, the Masur Museum of Art, and the Northeast Louisiana Children's Museum. Outdoor enthusiasts will love checking out the Louisiana Purchase Gardens, Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge, or the spectacular Kiroli Park in nearby West Monroe, too.

Plus, Monroe is home to the University of Louisiana - Monroe, so it's a bit of a college town. You're sure to find more than enough restaurants and vibrant activities in Monroe to keep you busy for a weekend getaway - or longer.

Layton Castle is the best place to stay in Monroe. It was originally called Mulberry Grove Plantation and the first construction on the property was a cottage that was built in 1814 by Judge Henry Bry. A bit under a century later, in 1910, Bry's granddaughter-in-law, Eugenia Stubbs Layton Wright, built the castle that visitors can see and visit today.

Later on, in the 1930s, the castle was divided into apartments. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978; descendants of the original family live on the property on the second floor of the castle. Layton Castle hosts weddings and other events, and now, several of the castle's units can be rented through Airbnb. It's a lovely spot for a vacation, and it's the perfect place to stay when visiting or passing through this part of Louisiana.

Suite 6 is an excellent choice. It sleeps two guests in one bedroom and has one bathroom. It also includes a fully-equipped kitchen with an induction stove, a stainless steel oven, a dishwasher, and a full-sized refrigerator and freezer. It's fully stocked with essential cooking tools so that guests can prepare meals for themselves during their stay.

Guests will also find a cozy sitting area with an arched, built-in bookcase, comfortable seating, and a television. There's an attached, 29-foot-long sun porch that overlooks the West Garden if guests wish to sit outside instead.

The bedroom features an early 1900s-style queen-sized four-poster mahogany bed. You'll love the memory foam mattress, high-quality linens, and the decor and furnishings in this space.

Suite 6 is lovely, but also be sure to get outside and enjoy the property while you are at Layton Castle. This castle is on five acres, and those five acres are full of live oaks, magnolias, pecan trees, crepe myrtles, and over 40 camellias. You'll love taking it all in.
