There’s A Lake Hiding In A Historic Kentucky Fort Where You Can Camp Year-Round

Columbus-Belmont State Park in Kentucky offers year-round camping with historic significance and scenic beauty.

We love nothing more than a night spent in the Kentucky wilds, with our numerous state parks offering some truly spectacular camping opportunities. However, there are only a handful of sites open for year-round camping in Kentucky, which can cramp your camping plans if you don't plan ahead! Happily, one of the best campsites in the Bluegrass *is* open year-round, and it's located in what's perhaps the most unique and scenic state park in Kentucky.

One of the most breathtaking Kentucky State Parks is also one of the criminally overlooked.

Located in the southwesternmost corner of Kentucky, the Columbus-Belmont State Park is a historic hidden treasure.

This park is actually part of the Kentucky Great River Road, an epic expanse that's peak Bluegrass beauty.

But the park is most notable for its historic significance. This 156-acre site played a fascinating role in the American Civil War. Visitors today can explore a Confederate fortification built during the War Between the States. The site was considered by both North and South to be strategically significant in gaining and maintaining control of the Mississippi River.

It's difficult to believe that such a beautiful region was once the site of such fraught history. Today, it's a place of quiet and sublime beauty where you'll find folks walking and exploring...

...and children laughing and playing.

It's also one of the few Kentucky State Parks open for year-round camping, making it all the more special. Here, visitors can relax amid beautiful settings on the river cliff campground at one of the 38 sites, which feature utility hookups and grills.

Other amenities at this year-round campsite (which is pet-friendly, too) include a central service with restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Please note, however, that there are fewer amenities offered in the off season.

With its lakefront views and intriguing history, we can't imagine a more unique place to spend the night in Kentucky!
