Whether you're a lifelong resident of Iowa or simply passing through for the weekend, there's an accommodation in Mason City that could impress just about anyone. The Historic Park Inn, aside from being the last standing hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, offers a chance to step back in time. Here's more on this fascinating hotel that just might be the most unique in all of Iowa:
The iconic Historic Park Inn can be found at 7 W State Street, Mason City, IA 50401.
What puts this unique accommodation on the map is its title as the last standing hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The hotel dates back to 1910, when it was built along with the adjacent City National Bank by the famous architect. Wright began drawing illustrations for the soon-to-be hotel in December of 1908, and construction began a little over a year later. While he supervised the initial stages of the building, the rest was overseen by William Drummond.
Due to competition in the hotel industry as well as the closing of City National Bank, the Park Inn gradually declined in business until it was closed in 1972.
Fortunately, thanks to several grants, a complete renovation of the hotel was possible. The Park Inn was open for business again by 2011 and has since been attracting visitors from everywhere.
A visit to the hotel today is a step back in time, where visitors can admire the authentic construction of Wright’s work.
The first floor of the hotel contains the 1910 Lounge, complete with 100-year-old pool tables and large comfy chairs to sink into.
What makes this hotel especially unique is that, despite its being over a century old, the renovations offer a contemporary and sophisticated feel.
While the feel of the hotel is largely modern, the careful restoration of details helped retain the authentic feel of the original space.
As you can imagine from the photographs below, the rooms are welcoming and cozy.
Plenty of spaces around the site lend themselves to curling up with a book, catching up on work, or simply sitting and admiring this unique piece of history. Whether you've come to admire the architecture, or simply enjoy a relaxing getaway, your time at the Historic Park Inn will not soon be forgotten.
