This Illinois Airbnb Is Like Stepping Onto the Set of Swiss Family Robinson
Experience a modern-day Swiss Family Robinson treehouse near Starved Rock State Park in Illinois.
There are few films I remember watching more than the 1960 version of Swiss Family Robinson. I can still feel the carpet as I sat criss-crossed on the floor, looking up at the television, enthralled by this grand tale of adventure. I believe that film had a small role in influencing the travel writer I've since become. If you're like me, then you're a sucker for nostalgia.
A Modern-Day Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse
This vacation rental near Starved Rock State Park in Illinois easily transports you to a modern-day Swiss Family Robinson treehouse.
Climb the winding staircase to the top of the cabin and gaze out at the surrounding forest. Sip on your morning coffee on your private deck, or cozy up around the fire pit over s'mores. The treehouse comfortably sleeps eight guests across three bedrooms and a sofa bed. It's important to note that one of the bedrooms is a loft and doesn't have a door.
Not Your Average Treehouse Airbnb
While the characters of Swiss Family Robinson had to get creative with their meals, you'll enjoy access to a beautiful full kitchen and outdoor grill. Also, unlike the film, you'll have access to one and a half bathrooms. Now, you may not be roughing it like the characters in the book or movie, but your elevated stature and the surrounding woods make it easy for your mind to wander to a deserted island. Although there is a 65-inch Smart TV, should you wish to revisit the Hollywood classic on the mini silver screen.
There are more than 26 acres of woods to explore on the property. In fact, the treehouse sits right along the edge of one of the many beautiful sandstone bluffs the area is famous for. Additionally, guests have access to an on-site boat launch that will push out directly on the Illinois River for your own Swiss Family jungle cruise. If you need to rent a watercraft, the hosts can point you in the direction of a local marina just across the river. Or, if you just want to sit back and relax, book a two-hour cruise on the nearby Sainte Genevieve Riverboat.
Nearby Attractions: Starved Rock State Park, Ottawa Canyon, and More
What is particularly compelling about this magic treehouse is its proximity to Starved Rock State Park. Thirteen miles of hiking trails are a short 10-minute drive away. Some of my favorite hikes in the area include Ottawa Canyon and Lover's Leap Overlook. You can also enjoy one of the many local restaurants in downtown Ottawa if you want to revisit civilization.
Whether you're a Chicagoan looking to get away from the concrete jungle or a local in search of a staycation, this treehouse vacation rental near Starved Rock State Park is perfect for reconnecting with the great outdoors. Bring a copy of Swiss Family Robinson (book or film!) and imagine yourself lost in a faraway land. Then, when your daydreams begin to float back to reality, hit the nearby trails and local eateries for a bite. What other spots in Illinois remind you of one of your favorite films?
