Sleep Like Kevin McCallister at This Home Alone-Themed Hotel Suite Near Chicago

The Graduate Evanston brings the classic holiday movie to life with ‘90s decor, clever “Easter eggs,” and all the comforts Kevin would approve of — from plaid PJs to Little Nero’s pizza.

Some holiday movies resonate so deeply that they instantly become one of your go-tos, no matter where or when you grew up. As a ‘90s kid, Home Alone is one of those for me — and, let’s be honest, for just about everyone else who’s seen it. It wasn’t a movie we just watched; we absorbed and memorized (and, in my case at least, admittedly quoted) it, from the chaotic family airport dash and Buzz’s tarantula to Kevin’s triumphant “I made my family disappear!” realization over a bowl of ice cream and the aftershave scream in the mirror.

So naturally, when I learned a few years ago that a hotel outside Chicago had recreated a piece of this pop culture icon as an overnight stay, it shot straight to the top of my holiday bucket list.

My family moved to the Missouri Ozarks two years ago, which means I’m now close enough to make an easy five-hour drive to Chicagoland. It’s just far enough that I rarely do it without a reason, but this felt like the perfect one. I’d kept up with social media videos of the storied Home Alone Room at the Graduate by Hilton Evanston for a few years — the retro TV, the matching plaid pajamas, the carefully arranged props that look genuinely plucked straight from the set — and decided it was finally time to live out my Kevin McCallister fantasy — minus the booby traps and burglars.

Inside the Home Alone Room

Stepping inside was everything I imagined. It feels like being dropped into a 1990s holiday time capsule where only the good stuff made the cut. Graduate Hotels are known for incorporating local culture and nostalgia into their design, and this room absolutely nails it, blurring the line between a themed stay and a full-blown movie immersion. While the layout replicates the McCallisters’ master bedroom, it also pulls elements from the rest of the house, turning the space into a scavenger hunt for superfans. A life-size Michael Jordan cutout stands in the corner, that signature grin reminding you of Kevin’s improvised dance party distraction. Across the room, a faux tarantula inside a cage is harmless, but uncanny enough to trigger creepy-crawly flashbacks. A wanted poster featuring Harry and Marv, the infamous Wet Bandits, sits on a dresser alongside old baseball cards, a vintage Playboy magazine, and Kevin’s hand-drawn “Battle Plan.” It’s impossible not to smile.

All of it is wrapped in the warm, slightly over-the-top aesthetic of a well-decorated ’90s holiday home, somehow perfectly executed in a relatively small hotel room. Fresh poinsettias, garlands, and wreaths give the room that Christmas-morning glow, and framed family photos nod to the fun and oh-so-relatable chaos that defined the McCallisters.

The hotel didn’t stop at decor. Much to my very pleasant surprise, the bathroom shelves are stocked with Brut aftershave and Right Guard shaving cream, which, it turns out, you can apply without yelling dramatically into the mirror. Not that I tried, of course. In the closet, matching adult-sized versions of Kevin’s red-and-green plaid pajamas hang neatly, ready for a perfect photo op. All the Home Alone movies are available on demand, along with a VHS copy of the original. And if you really want to channel Kevin, pop in Angels With Filthy Souls, the black-and-white gangster flick he cleverly used to terrorize his intruders. Watch it on a (what else?) chunky retro television, the kind that doesn’t stream and that you’ll need an actual remote control to operate.

The hotel’s full “McCallister Experience” draws you even deeper into your personal movie set. A Polaroid camera stands ready to capture that perfectly imperfect instant-film magic — the slightly overexposed, slightly blurry photos that somehow feel more special than anything on your phone. The snack lineup is peak 1990s concession stand: Junior Mints, peanut M&Ms, Sugar Babies, original Cheetos, and Pepsi. “Little Nero’s” even delivers a lovely, large cheese pizza, just the way Kevin ordered it.

The immersive experience extends down to the room keys, a signature touch across all Graduate Hotels. Each one resembles a student ID, usually vintage, tied to the local university. Since Evanston is home to Northwestern, mine featured Kevin McCallister’s faux school credentials. These tiny but delightfully clever touches feel like a wink, making the stay as playful as it is nostalgic.

A Final Touch of Movie Magic

If you want to add yet another layer to your Home Alone pilgrimage, the real-life McCallister house sits just 20 minutes away in Winnetka. The iconic brick home — instantly recognizable even three decades and a major renovation later — is private property, so admire it respectfully from the street. Still, standing outside a place so closely tied to childhood memories delivers its own unexpected emotion: a fleeting reminder of how quickly time passes.

The Graduate’s Home Alone Room taps into that exact feeling. Yes, it’s just a themed accommodation. Still, it’s also an homage to the comfort of beloved movies, to the messy joy of the holidays, and to the way a memory can instantly transport us, as powerfully as any plane ticket. As a new Midwesterner, it also felt a bit like a rite of passage — a quirky, heartfelt winter getaway that celebrates the region’s affection for cozy traditions and a good story told well.
