The best campgrounds in Idaho offer some of the most exciting ways to spend the warm seasons. Summer is the perfect time to head outdoors, enjoy a little fresh air, and admire some of Mother Nature’s most incredible creations. While there are several ways to do this, one of my favorites is on a camping trip. Idaho is home to dozens of camping spots, but one stands out as more beautiful and worthwhile — Upper Payette Lake Campground, which is located approximately 30 minutes from McCall. Nested at the edge of the mountains and sitting on the shores of Upper Payette Lake, this Idaho campground is sure to make your summer splendid.
We could list many of the best campgrounds in Idaho but near the top of that list would be Upper Payette Lake Campground.
This beautiful camping spot in Idaho is just a short drive from many recreational opportunities. It’s beautiful, quiet, and perfect if you want to escape into nature for a while.
One of the most beautiful campgrounds in Idaho only has 20 campsites available, so if this is your summer vacation, plan ahead.
It is perfect for those who love to spend time in a tent as there are no hookups for trailers and RVs. Twelve of the campsites are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
But you can make a reservation months ahead for eight of the campsites to enjoy lakefront camping in Idaho.
While the campsites may not offer tons of amenities, you’ll still enjoy a picnic table and fire ring at each site. Plus, there are plenty of trees to help you stay cool during those hot summer days. There are also no trash dumpsters so be prepared to pack out all trash.
Upper Payette Lake Campground is located along the shore of the beautiful Upper Payette Lake.
And while the campground is definitely lovely, you may not want to spend all of your time there. Spend some time on the lake.
Find the boat ramp located next to the campground: Motorized use on the lake is limited to a “no wake” restriction.
Go paddleboarding or set sail on your favorite raft. Fish a spell, swim, and let the cool waters refresh you during the summer heat.
And enjoy incredible mountain views throughout your entire stay.
It truly is a slice of heaven and we find it worthwhile just for the breathtaking landscapes.
And for even better scenery, take the moderately challenging 4.5-mile loop trail through the rich woods.
Some of the trails lead from the campground.
Discover more on the Upper Payette Lake Campground web page. The campground is typically open from June to September. What are some of your favorite campgrounds in Idaho? What are some of your favorite outdoor activities in the state? Let us know in the comments below.
