I grew up in a family that spent our summers camping. I’ve stayed in dozens of campgrounds throughout my life and have a few that are personal favorites (that could be a whole other article …). However, I recently stumbled across a new camping destination that’s a bit off-the-beaten-path but it quickly made its way to the top of my favorites list. It is Twin Lakes Reservoir near Preston. This campground is a bit different as it’s owned by the Twin Lakes Canal Company but it’s perfect for some time in nature. It’s one destination you’ll likely see me visiting year after year.

Twin Lakes Reservoir is located approximately 15 miles northwest of Preston, near the small town of Clifton. It isn’t large when compared to many of the other lakes in Idaho but it’s perfect for boating, paddling, fishing, and swimming.

We spent several days at Twin Lakes Campground. This is a fabulous place if you want to spend time on the water because the majority of campsites are located right next to the reservoir. In fact, we would anchor our boat at our campsite and hop in and out throughout the day.

There are 56 campsites at Twin Lakes Reservoir with many large enough for trailers. There is no water and electricity and we discovered there were no picnic tables. If you come, make sure to bring a table!

But if you just want a camping spot where you can relax and enjoy the views, this is it. When I wasn’t out in the boat fishing, I was sitting next to the shore, watching my kids kayak, paddleboard, and swim.

Dogs are also allowed at Twin Lakes Campground but they must be kept on a leash at all times.

I loved spending my evenings along the shore, staring at the Idaho sunsets — it was breathtaking.

My husband loved spending his days fishing. Twin Lakes offers excellent bass and trout fishing and he caught tons of bluegill.

We even spotted all types of birds on and near the water including several bald eagles, which my children loved.

We visited on a holiday weekend and despite the large number of campsites, the campground was full. Reservations are recommended at this campground and must be made at least two weeks prior to your arrival. If reservations are not made before that time, campsites are based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Overall, my travels off the beaten path were well worth it and my family loved our adventures camping and playing in the water. We are already anxious to return next year.
