Head Off The Beaten Path For A Weekend Of Camping At Hawaii’s Kokololio Beach Park

Kokololio Beach Park on Oahu's northeastern coast offers a serene camping experience with stunning sunrises, fine white sand, and sparkling waters.

With endless summer weather comes endless opportunities for summer activities: swimming, surfing, hiking, and perhaps my favorite — camping trips. And when you think of camping in Hawaii, you imagine pitching your tent in the sand, where you can fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves, and jump into the ocean the moment you wake up. If you’re searching for your next camping getaway, why not head off-the-beaten-path to the northeastern coast of Oahu where you’ll discover an underrated paradise?

Welcome to Kokololio Beach Park, a stunning stretch of sand that’s perfect for your next beach day or camping trip. Nestled between Laie and Hau’ula Beach Parks, this underrated beach is backed by shady trees and features fine, white sand and sparkling waters.

Hidden from the highway by small dunes, this spot is a hidden oasis.

Swimming is best during the calm summer months, while winter brings pounding shore break perfect for surfing or bodyboarding. If you’re not a watersports person, you can still stroll along the shore, soak up the sun, catch some fish, and relax.

If you visit during the week, you might find that you have the entire beach to yourself, but on weekends — especially in the warm summer months — you’ll find the beach populated by tents.

A permit is required for this county campsite where you will find five campsites, one comfort station, and outdoor showers.

Those who enjoy a mellow, no-frills camping experience will love Kokololio — perhaps in part due to the stunning sunrises witnessed from the shore.

So, what are you waiting for? If you’re looking to get away from it all for a few days, this is the place to do it.
