Ride a Christmas Train, Then Stay in a Christmas-Themed Hotel for a Holly Jolly Colorado Adventure

All aboard the historic Royal Gorge Route Train and its merry Santa Express! Located in Canon City, the Santa Express Train is about as magical as it gets, as the train—which makes four trips a day—runs to the North Pole via the scenic Royal Gorge Route.

While aboard, you will not only be treated to a special meet and greet with Jolly Old St. Nicholas himself but also to beautiful decor and light displays, cookies and cocoa, and a gift from Santa.

If you're looking for something a bit more low key than the Santa Express, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad also runs a Holiday Train. This is the perfect option for anyone who just wants to enjoy the festive atmosphere, seasonal food, and maybe some cocktails for the grown-ups, without all the excitement of Santa. Whichever train you choose, it’s one of the best Christmas activities in Colorado that the entire family will love.

The Santa Express Train runs from late November through Dec. 30, 2025, and lasts about an hour and a half, while the Holiday Train operates on select dates throughout November and December and runs roughly an hour and 45 minutes. All departures leave from the Royal Gorge Route Railroad depot in Canon City, with seating options ranging from standard cars to dome seating and first-class upgrades.

After you return to the station, head straight to your accommodations at The Broadmoor, a gorgeous hotel in Colorado Springs less than an hour from Canon City.
