The Amazing Campground in Southern California We Want to Visit All-Year Round
Spend time near one of the best beaches in Southern California when you pitch a tent at San Mateo Campground.
One of my favorite ways to spend time outdoors is by camping. There is something relaxing about spending the night under the stars. Fortunately, here in Southern California, there are many places to camp no matter the time of the year. And while we have several campground recommendations, one destination that has become a favorite for locals and travelers alike is the year-round San Mateo Campground at San Onofre State Beach.

San Onofre State Beach, located in San Clemente, is one of the most popular state parks in Southern California. This 3,000-acre state park attracts nearly 2.5 million visitors each year for its beautiful beaches, world-class surfing, and excellent wildlife viewing.
The San Mateo Campground is one of three units at this state park, and no matter the season, it is a delightful place for time outdoors. This campground is approximately 3.5 miles inland, but you won’t feel like it’s a long trek to enjoy the beaches and water that we love. In fact, at the campground, you’ll find a 1.5-mile nature trail that takes you directly to Trestles Beach, which is well-known for its remarkable surfing conditions.
The San Mateo Campground in Southern California is quite large with several dozen campsites available. Many of these campsites feature amenities such as a fire pit, picnic table, and electric and water hookups. Within the campground, you’ll also find an RV sanitation station, coin-operated showers, and flush toilets.
The campsites are quite large, and depending on the site, you may have some shade to protect you from the sun. However, I always recommend bringing a canopy or two for a little extra cover.
Due to the area's popularity, I recommend making a reservation for this campground. Reservations can be placed up to six months in advance. When placing your reservation, consider when you will arrive as the San Onofre San Mateo Campground is locked and closed each day from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Also, only eight people, including children, are allowed at each campsite. If more people wish to join in the fun, you will need to book additional campsites. Dogs are also allowed but they must be on a leash no longer than six feet and are not allowed in buildings or on the beach. They also must be in a vehicle, trailer, or tent at night.
San Onofre State Beach is a wonderful place for some time outdoors, in the sunshine, and even in the water. And with the San Mateo Campground, you can come and stay for a while. In fact, it’s a year-round campground in Southern California that you may find yourself visiting multiple times a year.
