Spend the Night in an Authentic Historic Hotel in the Middle of Northern California’s Gold Country
This historic hotel in Northern California will take you back in time. It's a cozy step into the past.
Located approximately 30 minutes northeast of Nevada City along the banks of the South Fork of the Yuba River, Washington is one of the oldest mining towns in the Golden State. It is here you will find the Washington Hotel. But this isn't your typical Northern California hotel—it is a place to stay with a rich history, cozy rooms, unique activities, and a postcard-perfect setting.
Built in 1857, the Washington Hotel is one of the most historic hotels in the state of California. It was built by a Dutch immigrant named Hessel B. Buisman to be a refuge for, at that time, primarily miners and their families who came here during the great California Gold Rush. The hotel survived two devastating fires, standing today as an important part of the history of Gold Country in Northern California.
Even the way it looks hearkens back to a long-ago era when life was much simpler (by today’s high-energy, fast-paced tech world standards). Step inside and it's like your current worries melt away. Here, it is easy to have a getaway to remember.
The Washington Hotel isn't large—that's part of its charm. This hotel features 14 delightful rooms with comfort in mind and numerous amenities. We particularly love the Grover Cleveland Room, which is named after the former President of the United States. On Sunday, Oct. 6, 1901, Grover Cleveland signed the hotel register, and this room has since become a guest favorite—you'll want to book it early. Plus, this room is larger than several others, located at the front of the hotel, and features a second-floor balcony. Keep in mind that not all rooms have a private bathroom.
The Grand Suite Room is another unique and charming room at the Washington Hotel. This room has its own private entrance from a private balcony. Suitable for up to four guests, this suite is roomy and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountainsides and town.
The Honeymoon Suite, another popular option, has hosted many newlywed couples since its early founding. With a queen-sized bed and a private bathroom with a cozy bathtub, it's all you need to start your nuptials off on the right foot!
However, it isn't just the room accommodations that set the Washington Hotel apart from others. This historic destination also features a delicious café and bar, serving comfort food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And, while you may never want to leave your cozy guest room, you may also participate in the many activities offered here, including pool and horseshoe tournaments, live music nights, themed costume parties, game nights, and so much more.
For a relaxing stay that feels a world away in the midst of Northern California’s Gold Country, a visit to the historic Washington Hotel should be on your bucket list. It's a place of history, comfort, and memories. Make sure to visit the Washington Hotel website for more information.
