Arizona is home to hundreds of hotels, motels, resorts, and inns that offer a quiet place to rest for a night or two. We’ve featured quite a few of them in the past and today we’re taking a look at another that is historic and beautiful.
La Posada Hotel is a historic hotel located at the edge of town in Winslow, right along the old Route 66 and Amtrak lines.
It was built in 1929 by the Fred Harvey Company as a railroad hotel for passengers and designed by renowned architect Mary Colter, known for her buildings at the Grand Canyon. Evidently, Colter long considered this particular hotel her masterpiece with its Spanish Colonial design and incredible details.
The hotel opened the following year and operated until 1957, when it closed to turn into corporate offices before eventually being abandoned. However, like many of the other long-abandoned Harvey Houses (the name the company gave to its line of hotels), La Posada was in danger of demolition in the 1990s.
Thankfully, the hotel was purchased in 1997 and restored to its former glory. A walk-through of the hotel will show you just how much love and sweat was put into this job!
The rooms are warm, cozy, and inviting. Each one is named after a celebrity of yesteryear, such as Betty Grable, Roy Rogers, and Clark Gable.
And that attention to detail! You’ll find many of the rooms feature handmade bedposts, woven rugs, and incredible tilework.
Meanwhile, the grounds of La Posada are equally beautiful! You’ll find several different gardens at the north entrance of the hotel.
Enjoy a quiet stroll through the rose garden or even the maze before heading off to dinner.
Facing the railroad (and just a short walk to the still-operating train station) is the hotel’s signature restaurant, the Turquoise Room. Here, you’ll find a delicious menu that features a blend of regional foods.
This is definitely the perfect spot to sit back, relax, and watch the trains go by before retiring for the night.
