Despite so many places to explore in the Last Frontier, this remote locale for beach camping in Alaska is one of the best around. Kachemak Bay, off the Kenai Peninsula, is a gorgeous place to spend some time. With hiking trails and plenty of wildlife, pack your camping kit and head on out to this beautiful location.
Homer is a small city on Kachemak Bay, on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula.
Kachemak Bay is surrounded by stunning mountainscapes and hanging glaciers. There are hundreds of miles of coastline to explore along the Bay.
In addition to that, Kachemak Bay State Park is Alaska’s first state park.
It covers over 400,000 acres of remote mountains, glaciers, forests, and beaches. There’s countless marine wildlife, hiking trails, and more.
You can camp anywhere in the park, but the coastline is the easiest to get to.
The sand is a great spot to enjoy beach camping in Alaska for a night or more, and there are water taxis out of Homer that will drop you off at the beach and pick you up again on a designated day.
Halibut Cove is one of the only small towns across the Bay.
This small artists village is a wonderful stopover if you want to do a little shopping and dining on your way in or out of the wilderness. It’s a beautiful small town with regular ferries to Homer.
The kayaking around Kachemak Bay is absolutely world-class.
The marine life you can see while out and about is amazing. Be prepared to see orcas, dolphins, sea otters, bald eagles, and more. Whether kayaking or hiking, the Bay offers a wonderful camping experience.
Another thing to be aware of is that Kachemak Bay State Park is mostly remote.
So you must be prepared to handle all emergencies, and pack in and out all the food and necessities you’ll need. This is an adventure you won’t soon forget!
