Discover the Americana Town in Wyoming So Charming You’ll Want To Keep It a Secret
A rich history, Wild West vibe, and a slower pace are just a few reasons this is a true Americana town.
The small towns that dot Wyoming often don’t get the attention they deserve, especially those with only a few dozen residents. In fact, there’s one small town in the Cowboy State that’s tiny, one-of-a-kind, and deserves to be well known. It is a town with a rich history, a few hidden gems, and is close to many bucket-list-worthy attractions. It is the small town of Hartville, Wyoming, and it’s so charming that you may be upset that word is spreading about this historic destination.
Hartville is a small town in Platte County in eastern Wyoming. Fewer than 100 people live in Hartville, and it’s the type of place where everyone knows your name. It’s a classic American town where it feels like not much has changed—a slower pace, remote surroundings, and friendly neighbors make you feel right at home.
Despite its small size, Hartville has many claims to fame. For example, Hartville is Wyoming’s oldest incorporated town. It was originally settled in the 1870s, but it wasn’t until 1884 that copper deposits were found and the town officially became incorporated. And, as you can guess, the discovery of copper led to a mining boom, and the town grew.
In its early days, Hartville was a true Wild West town. As you walked along its streets, you would see multiple saloons, gambling houses, and even an opera house. You wouldn’t be surprised to see a brawl or even a shootout along its main street as this town was known to be loud and rowdy.
Today, as you walk along the town's streets, you’ll still see evidence of its Wild West history. The buildings may look older, and some a little more run down, but they still boast that original American spirit from decades ago.
Of course, one of our favorite gems is Miners and Stockmen’s Steakhouse and Spirits. This is Wyoming’s oldest bar still in operation today. It opened in the 1860s, even before the town was officially incorporated. When you visit, you can dine on fresh steaks that are prepared in-house. There’s also more than 35 different types of whiskey on the menu and desserts that you’ll be craving for days to come.
While this town is certainly tiny, it doesn’t mean there’s not plenty to do. Just a short drive away is Guernsey State Park, a popular place for fishing, camping, and hiking. A short, easy, and scenic hike in this state park is the Brimmer Point Trail, a one-mile loop trail with little elevation gain. But this trail offers some pretty spectacular views of the state park and the surrounding area, making it well worth your time.
If you love history like me, I also recommend checking out the Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site and Fort Laramie National Historic Site, both just a short drive away from town. Or, you can always visit one of the many other small towns in the area with a rich mining history like Sunrise.

And for even more proof that Hartville is a true Americana town, just spend some time enjoying the natural beauty surrounding this community. You’ll enjoy open prairie and vast skies for miles. This is a small Wyoming town where you can easily escape the stresses of daily life. You can sit back and think about what life was like decades ago—when life was a little less complicated. This is a town that has a story to tell.
