Aztalan State Park in Jefferson, Wisconsin, offers a glimpse into the life of the Middle Mississippi Tradition culture from over 1000 years ago.
Wisconsin might not seem to be that old, but trust us, there were loads of people who lived here long before the miners or fur traders. Over 1000 years ago, Native American people lived here near Jefferson, Wisconsin. They were known as the Middle Mississippi Tradition. The cool thing is that you can get a sneak peak of how they lived by visiting Aztalan State Park.
1. Aztalan State Park is located in Jefferson, Wisconsin.
2. It was settled around 900 A.D. by a culture known as the Middle Mississippi Tradition.
3. These are steps leading up to the largest platform mound.
4. Most of the residents lived in circular or rectangular houses.
5. The settlement included large, flat-topped pyramidal mounds.
6. The stockades (pictured here) served defensive and ceremonial functions.
7. The settlement was abandoned between 1200 and 1300 AD.
