Explore the Chilling History of the Mothman in West Virginia

There have been multiple sightings of this elusive cryptid, from gravediggers to stargazing teenagers, but what exactly is the story behind the Mothman in West Virginia? Like most legends, the stories over time get complex and filled with mysteries, but all of them are a chilling ode to annals of unknown creatures. A certain sense of dread surrounds these foreboding stories that all spring forth from a small town in West Virginia. True or not? The first sighting of Mothman has strangely been mixed up over the years and lends itself to the mystery of the creature's origins. One account starts in a rather grim place, a graveyard, a fitting start to any paranormal tale. As two gravediggers were out dealing with the unpleasant nature of their line of work, a large winged mass shot forth from the shadowy ground and flew over their heads. Perhaps this was an underground creature springing forth from an unknown cavernous hole from the land of the dead, or maybe it was just a figment of imagination from being subject to such a creepy breeding ground for such stories. 

Around the same time, other stories started to emerge all out of Point Pleasant a small river town in West Virginia. In the 1960s, there was a slew of sightings, and one of the earliest eyewitnesses was a group of teenagers. They described seeing a large humanoid creature stretching out to be over seven feet tall with large bat-like wings and terrifying ruby-red eyes. This would be one of the first of many sightings in Point Pleasant. 

Still, another account comes from two stargazing lovers. A young couple ventured out to have a romantic evening, but they were far from alone in the dark. The couple reports seeing a bright star that turned red and flew overhead. The object was large and opposing, blocking the starry night sky. Terrified, they stumbled back into the vehicle, fumbled with the keys, and took off down the road at alarming speeds. That was when, out of the blurred vision of the shadowy trees, the girl saw a winged creature chasing them down. Blacken wings propelled it forward as it stared with piercing red eyes. 

So, what is Mothman? Is it a terrifying apparition from the land of the dead? Perhaps it is an alien or a sinister cryptid waiting to be fully discovered. We might not know for sure who or what Mothman really is, but shortly after the initial sightings, tragedy struck, forever solidifying him as part of Point Pleasant’s past.  

December 15th, 1967, the Silver Bridge suddenly collapsed, leaving 46 people dead. Many witnesses testified to seeing a strange flying creature around the bridge before its catastrophic collapse. These ominous sightings stirred even more fear among the locals ever since people claimed to see this insidious beast right before a tragic event.
