11 Ways West Virginia Is America’s Black Sheep… And We Love It That Way
West Virginia is unique for its outdoor activities, quirky festivals, and local traditions.
Other states might find us just a bit strange. We might let them think that to keep the state to ourselves, but we think West Virginia is just right! Here are a few of our quirks.
1. We don't really have big cities.
Charleston is the largest city in West Virginia, with a population of just 50,821.
2. You'll usually find us outside.
We never forgot how to play outdoors. Our state has hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, swimming holes, and more.
3. We're not afraid to jump off a bridge.
At the very least, we'll watch the jumpers at the annual Bridge Day Festival.
4. We celebrate roadkill.
The annual Road Kill Cookoff may not actually contain roadkill, but it celebrates the law that says we can eat it if we want to.
5. We do eat some odd foods.
Wild ramps are on everyone's menu every spring.
6. We love our guns.
Often that gun puts dinner on the table.
7. We take our hot dogs very seriously.
But we can't agree if they should come with slaw or not.
8. We're not afrad to get dirty.
Some of our best memories came from exploring off-road trails.
9. We'll swim right in nature.
Who need a pool when you have natural swimming holes?
10. We have some strange monsters.
But we love the Mothman, and give him his own statue and festival.
11. We keep things wild.
We think the state being wild and wonderful is just perfect.
