We’re a little weird here in Washington, and we like it that way. But there’s a difference between dancing to our own beat and doing something certifiably insane. Occasionally we hear news stories that make us wonder if we’ve ventured into the Twilight Zone. Here are some examples.
1. A few years ago, a woman decided to eat only dog and cat food for 30 days.
Dorothy Hunter of Richland announced in June of 2014 that she planned to eat nothing but cat and dog food for a month. She worked at a natural pet food store, and one day she didn’t have time to go get a snack, so she ate dog treats. She decided to keep eating them for 30 days and felt safe doing so since all her pet products were natural and healthy. The only point to the mission was to bring awareness to others about what they feed their pets and themselves. Hopefully, she was successful.
2. There may or may not have been FLYING JELLYFISH in Oakville.
You may have heard the story of an odd occurrence in Oakville, when a few strange rainfalls resulted in some mysterious blobs falling from the sky that 1. Were proven not to be airplane waste and 2. Got some people sick and killed a couple of pets. One theory is that flying jellyfish were involved. An author named Charles Fort, who investigates all things odd, speculated that there was a species of nearly transparent jellyfish floating in the upper atmosphere. Over the years, pilots have seen objects in the sky that resembled jellyfish, and people have found dead birds with marks on them that look like jellyfish stings.
3. Then there’s that whole Gravity Hill thing.
Located just north of Prosser, Gravity Hill is a mysterious phenomenon. You can pull up, put your car in neutral, and somehow start rolling uphill. Of course, many people think it’s an optical illusion, but people have tested the elevation and proven that there is an incline.
4. One time, a man who was high on meth crashed his car while wearing fake breasts and no pants.
No, this didn’t happen in Florida… it was in Seattle. A man crashed into three cars while doing 100 mph down a highway in April of 2013. When police arrived, they found he was wearing fake breasts and was pantsless. He told the officers he’d had a dream he was in a car crash.
5. And then there was the time a mom tried to sell her baby at a Taco Bell for $500.
In 2011 at a Clark County Taco Bell, a woman handed her newborn son to a customer and told her she could buy the infant for $500. The customer declined and called 911. The police found the woman in question and thankfully placed her baby with Child Protective Services.
6. Washington had a real life "Men in Black" incident.
The 1947 Maury Island Incident is one of the lesser-known UFO occurrences in our state. On June 21, Harold Dahl reported seeing six objects shaped like donuts floating 2,000 feet above his patrol boat. He took his boat to shore and captured several photos of the objects. The objects even released some strange debris, one piece killing his dog. Harold reported the incident to his boss, who went back to Maury Island to gather rock samples. While he was gathering the rocks, he said one of the airships came back, as if it was watching him. The next day, Harold was taken to breakfast by a man in a black suit who said bad things would happen if he told anyone about the story. To this day, the story is believed to be a hoax, but the two military intelligence officers investigating the sighting died in a car accident before they could complete it.
7. Oh, and did we mention that a bike on Vashon Island basically ate a tree?
In 1954, a local sheriff named Don Puz leaned his bicycle against a tree and left it there. The tree has slowly absorbed the bike, and the three is now a popular attraction on Vashon Island.
We might be a little weird here in Washington, but those occurrences thankfully aren’t the norm here. However, we do have some pretty disturbing unsolved mysteries.
