Our state is such a one-of-kind place that you can't swing a salmon without hitting something completely unique and quirky - it's just a fact of life in Washington. We can't possibly list everything unique about it, but here are a baker's dozen places and attractions in Washington State that belong to us, and us alone. You can't have them, but you sure ought to come see them for yourself!
1. The world's largest building by volume
The Boeing Everett Factory in Everett is an airplane assembly building and is the largest building in the world by volume at 472,370,319 cubic feet and covers 98.3 acres.
2. Tacoma is home to the only bridge made with original Dale Chihuly artwork
This 500-foot-long overpass links the Museum of Glass to downtown Tacoma and features original artwork by world renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.
3. Old-growth tree climbing in Deception Pass State Park
Did you know you can climb to the top of 300-foot Douglas Fir trees? A guided climbing tour from AdventureTerra promises a tree canopy adventure you'll never forget.
4. The largest egg in the world
This 12-foot long fiberglass egg is located in Winlock.
5. The biggest electric power facility in the country
The Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River was built to produce hydroelectric power and provide irrigation water. The dam supports four different power houses containing 33 hydroelectric generators!
6. Experience Music Project (EMP)
This Seattle museum is home to many unique items from famous musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana that you won't be able to find anywhere else, as well as some fascinating sci-fi exhibits.
7. The largest razor clam in the world
Next to the World's Largest Frying Pan in Long Beach, this attraction is set up to spit water out nearly every hour. It symbolizes the tradition of harvesting razor clams on the Long Beach Peninsula!
8. World's Largest Radio Flyer Wagon
Located at the Riverfront Park in Spokane, this treasured wagon measures about 27-feet long, 13-feet wide, and 27-feet tall.
9. The longest natural sandspit in the U.S.
This 5.5-mile natural sandspit juts out from the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula and encloses Dungeness Bay.
10. The oldest Starbucks
The very first shop that turned the company into what it is today was located in Seattle. The oldest location can be found by Pike Place Market. Now it's even counted among the historic places in Washington.
11. The largest privately owned collection of automobiles in the world
Harold Lemay owned a successful waste management company, so he was able to save up for this grand collection. After his death, the city of Tacoma donated 10 acres of land next to the Tacoma Dome to showcase some of his cars, and some other ones still remain at the Lemay Family Collection at Marymount in Spanaway.
12. Ivar's Seafood
This delicious chain is based in Seattle and has locations in the surrounding areas and also in Kennewick and Spokane. Eating at Ivar's is a rite of passage for those growing up or living in Washington.
13. The largest ferry system in the U.S.
The Washington State Ferries own 28 vessels and travel to 20 ports of call around the stunning Puget Sound.
