The Historic Train Depot In Washington That’s Too Charming For Words
History buffs, rejoice: The oldest surviving train depot in the state has been beautifully restored and well-maintained, and it’s open to the public. The Dayton Depot is listed on the local, state, and National Registers of Historic Places, and if you haven’t been, you should definitely check out this piece of living history.
The Dayton Depot was originally built in 1881.
That’s eight years before Washington became a state.
The town of Dayton was founded in the 1860s and includes quite a few incredible historic buildings.
The oldest working courthouse in the state is downtown, and there are two residential historic districts in the area.
The Dayton Depot’s structure has barely been altered in all of its years of existence. The first floor even has its original beadboard walls.
The depot is now a museum… and admission is free.
The museum shop is on the first floor in the former freight room. They sell commemorative gifts, pottery and local art. They also feature products from Caswell Massey Apothecary, the brand of soap that was carried on Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery Expedition.
Upstairs, you’ll find all kinds of collections and memorabilia from our railroad history.
They even have clothes and other artifacts from local pioneer families.
The restored Union Pacific Caboose, which was donated by Union Pacific Railway, is open for tours during special events.
Speaking of special events, the Depot grounds are available to rent for weddings and other special occasions.
The outdoor courtyard is beautiful, the perimeter is lined with built-in wooden benches, and the Depot is across the street from a Victorian hotel. It’s the perfect place to host a party.
The Dayton Depot is definitely one of the most charming buildings in the beautiful historic town. If you enjoy learning about our local history, check out some of our best historic villages.
