3 Reasons Why Washington Is the Best Place To Retire

Discover three compelling reasons why Washington stands out as one of the best places to retire, from breathtaking scenery to tax-friendly benefits and endless outdoor adventure.

As the stereotype goes, people typically move south when they retire, not north, but don’t keep Washington out of the running for a potential place to retire. Below are a few reasons why the Evergreen State has plenty to offer those ready to enter a calmer time in life, as well as a few options for the best places to retire in Washington.

1. Weather, Climate, and Natural Beauty

Located in the most northwestern part of the continental United States, it would seem logical that Washington experiences extreme weather like its eastern counterparts. But no. Although the state certainly has deeper winters and more distinct four seasons than its southern neighbor, Oregon, its climate remains somewhat mild overall in the western part of the state. And, even in the eastern part, where colder and hotter temperatures do exist, there aren’t as many severe weather patterns. Additionally, although Washington is famous for rain, it doesn’t even rank among the top 10 states with the highest rainfall per year

One of the most compelling reasons to live in the state is its environment and the dedication of its residents to preserving and protecting its landscapes and wildlife. The Evergreen State is stunningly gorgeous, with views that seem straight out of a postcard and a variety of terrains to explore. Mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests, grasslands, canyons, glaciers, volcanoes, coastlines, and temperate rainforests can all be found here, and ALL are immaculately cared for by the state and are respected by locals. Looking to hike and camp? Or boat and fish? Are you a fan of winter sports? Want to golf? There are a plethora of options to choose from for potential retirees.

2. Unique Lifestyle Benefits of Retiring in Washington

Washington locals know just how special their state is and have a great sense of pride for their communities, teams, and brands. Say you’re looking to retire, but still want to be around a thriving sports community? Seattle has some of the most fervent sports fans on the West Coast, hosting professional teams like the Mariners, Seahawks, Storm, and more (many of which have multiple trophies under their belts). The capital city also hosts some of the biggest brand names in the game, like Amazon and Starbucks, and the state as a whole is home to the headquarters of big brands like Costco, Boeing, and Microsoft. This means that there’s a lot of money coming into the state, which then leads to a higher number of jobs and a stronger economy. A strong economy leads to well-rounded communities, which benefits retirees.

Then, there’s the food. With agriculture prioritized throughout the state, Washington offers a large number of quality options for both buying in and buying out at restaurants where the term "farm to table" is eloquently put into practice. Most famously, the state is known for its drinking scene, both alcoholic and non alcoholic, with options like coffee, wine, beer, and cider. But even here, as with food, there’s great care taken to use local, organic ingredients.

3. Overall Quality of Life

Even outside of nature, food, sports, and famous companies, there are many reasons to live in Washington. In terms of affordability, the cost of living in places like Seattle or similarly large cities is high, but it drops significantly in smaller towns, even communities just 30 minutes away. Additionally, this state has no income tax and often has tax breaks for the elderly. Seattle and Spokane are going to have more options in terms of activities, like sports events, theaters, and museums, but Washington as a whole is flush with galleries, restaurants, and charming towns from one end to the next. If you’re looking for options, consider Port Townsend, Gig Harbor, Bellingham, and Sequim.

So, there you have it. Washington may be up north and away from the year-round sunshine that southern states receive, but it certainly has more than enough to make it one of the most desirable states for retirement in the U.S.
