By day, Natural Tunnel State Park is one of the coolest natural wonders in Virginia. Measuring 10 stories high and 850 feet long, this natural passage through a limestone ridge was once referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." This impressive, naturally formed cave is so large that it functions as a railroad tunnel. The first train passed through the tunnel in 1894, and today, it still operates as a railroad, but only to transport coal. One of the best ways to experience the park is hiking, and there's a nice variety to choose from. If you're fascinated by the tunnel, you can see it up close on the Tunnel and Carter Log Cabin Trail. This one-mile trek offers views of the tunnel as well as one of the oldest buildings in Scott County, believed to be built in 1784.

But there's another experience the park offers, and it's only for a limited time: Christmas Lighting of the Tunnel. This year's event will take place every Friday and Saturday from December 5th to 20th, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. This family-friendly event is free to attend, although standard parking and chairlift fees apply.

Speaking of chairlifts, that's where all the magic begins! You'll take a lift down to the tunnel, where you'll be surrounded by thousands of colorful Christmas lights. Once down at the level of the entrance, you'll notice animated holiday displays and even see a roaring fire inside. Help yourself to warm cider or hot chocolate as you listen to familiar carols being sung. From there, you can take the illuminated walkway to Carter Cabin for traditional Christmas stories intertwined with some fascinating history.
