For The First Time In 221 Years, A Rare Double Emergence Of Cicadas Is Expected In 2024

The sound of cicadas is synonymous with summer in Virginia. Their distinct -- and sometimes, nearly deafening drone -- inspires images of long summer days and sipping tea outdoors. You are probably aware that cicadas are cyclical creatures, meaning they emerge periodically. But you may not have realized that 2024 will truly be a hallmark year, as it will culminate in an extraordinarily rare double emergence of cicadas. Here's more on this fascinating phenomenon.

Cicadas in Virginia aren't exactly rare. They emerge every few years, causing quite a commotion.

There are actually different kinds of cicadas that emerge in different years. In 2024, Brood XIX will emerge between mid-May and late June.

These cicadas will be spotted in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The last time Brood XIX emerged was in 2011.

Cicada experts have noted that another population of cicadas will also be emerging during the late spring and early summer: Brood XIII. This emergence will take place in parts of Illinois and Indiana.

This dual emergence has not happened for quite some time. In fact, the last time these particular broods emerged during the same year was in 1803.

To put that into context, Thomas Jefferson was president at the time.

Fortunately, cicadas are generally harmless, except to fruit trees, although their noise can be incredibly intense.
