13 Ways Vermont Is America’s Black Sheep… And We Love It That Way

Discover the best hiking trails in the Pacific Northwest, known for their stunning scenic views and diverse landscapes.

Vermont is a weird and wonderful place, and we like that we don't quite fit in with the norm. After all, our quirkiness is one of our best traits! To call us the black sheep of the USA might seem like a slight, but really it's quite fitting. And quite frankly, we wouldn't have it any other way. Here are some things that make us awesomely different.

1. Our festivals celebrate some strange things...

Such as cows, garlic and Mac & Cheese. And these are some of the best parties of the year!

2. We elected a socialist congressman.

Not only did we feel the Bern, he almost made it all the way to the white house!

3. We have 6 seasons. Maybe 7.

Winter, mud, spring, summer, construction, fall and stick seasons.

4. We like our sweets a little different.

This is Sugar on Snow, aka maple syrup on fresh snow. To make it even more unique, we follow up this treat with a donut or a dill pickle.

5. We are presidential!

Despite being the 2nd least populated state we have produced two presidents (Coolidge and Arthur) and two almost presidents (Dean and Sanders).

6. Speaking of presidents, no fancy inauguration needed here!

Calvin Coolidge was sworn-in as president at 2:47 a.m. in 1923. His father, Col. John Coolidge, was a notary public and administered the oath of office to him. Immediately after, Coolidge went back to bed.

7. It's still illegal to whistle underwater in Vermont.

We're not sure why this became such an issue that a law had to be created, but it certainly sets us apart.

8. We grow our own food.

It's a hobby, sometimes a business, a way of life, and always fresh and delicious.

9. We missed out on the original 13 colonies.

If we were there a little earlier we would have been the 14th colony. The founders were probably too busy taking a good hike and enjoying the views. Besides, we kind of like being on our own.

10. We love unpredictable weather.

Shorts one minute, snow the next with no time (or reason) to change.

11. We love our hole in the walls.

Dining out doesn't always mean getting dolled up. We know the best food is the home cooked meals with friendly service.

12. Our accents and dialect are like no other.

Jeezum Crow! The best muddin is down street toward the moun'in!

13. We're not afraid of a little cold.

If you know how to layer properly, you can handle any temperature.

Oh, Vermont, you're so awesomely quirky. Think you know what it's like to date one of us? Here are 17 things you should know about dating someone from VT.
