Nowadays, we've all got professional quality cameras right in our pockets at all times, which makes it hard to imagine a time before cameras. In 1839, the world was forever changed by Louis Daguerre. This French inventor is considered the father of modern photography. It wasn't long before his new light-sensitive materials and developing processes spread over to the United States. As you can imagine, very few of these original oldest photos of America have survived today, but there are a few that remain intact for modern citizens to marvel over. We've found a great video that shows off some of the earliest photographs in America. It's amazing to think about just how different life was back in the 1840s!
This photo dates back to around 1846. It's of the Plymouth and Kingston Express Wagon in Massachusetts. Next time you're complaining about a traffic jam, be grateful you're at least going faster than a horse and buggy.
This picture shows a group posing in front of a shop in Philadelphia in 1847. It's impossible to imagine just how novel the idea of being photographed was at that time.
Here's the riverfront in Cincinnati back in 1848. It certainly looked different then!

It's truly mind-blowing to step back and think about these images, which are among the oldest pictures of America. They represent the earliest true image of our country that remains in existence today. This is honestly as far back as we can physically see. Of course, many talented painters existed before photography was born, but portraits and landscapes, no matter how realistic, could never escape the limitations of artistic interpretation and skill. These first photos taken in America are the furthest back we can go without having to rely on our imaginations. How lucky we are that they have been preserved for us to enjoy.
