1. The Homestead Cabin

That’s right, you really can sleep just like the settlers did in this 1880s homestead cabin located near the Badlands National Park. With no electricity in this secluded rustic cabin, you’ll be able to fully disconnect from your urban life and spend a few days off the grid.

You’ll find this little town 22 miles west of Murdo. Visitors can view props from the Dances with Wolves film, watch live entertainment, and even dress up in 1880s wardrobe as they explore the town!

Visit De Smet and you can explore the very homestead Laura Ingalls lived on and wrote about! All buildings accurately portray life on the homestead, including the one room school house. Spend the day enjoying covered wagon rides, learning how to wash clothes on the washboard, making jump ropes and corn cob dolls!

This small town is full of historic attractions including the saloon where Wild Bill Hickok was shot by Jack McCall, Mount Moriah’s Cemetery where Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock were put to rest, a 100-year-old Gold mine, various museums and re-inactions, and so much more. Time travel is impossible, but this town definitely makes you feel as through you’ve been transported back in the 1800’s.

This town near Hartford features more than 50 animated exhibits of the American west as well as animated mannequins that re-enact life in the 1800s. Visit their antique museum and chow down on some delicious buffalo burgers.
