When you live in South Dakota, there are some things that everyone knows. They're not necessarily "official rules," but when you're a South Dakotan they're just a way of life.
1. Pheasant hunting is a state pastime.
Get ready for pheasant season because everything else is about to become secondary.
2. You're either East River or West River.
We don't necessarily love you any less based on which you are...but there IS a difference.
3. This is a buffalo.
It's actually a bison, not a buffalo. But we don't really want to hear your explanation about the distinctions between the two. In South Dakota, we're calling them buffalo.
4. Steak. It's what's for dinner.
We produce a lot of beef cattle here. We know how to grow 'em and we know how to grill 'em.
5. Kuchen. It's what's for dessert.
Many of us our proud of our German heritage, and those of us who don't have German ancestors still love kuchen.
6. Suck it up, Buttercup.
We don't want to hear your whining and complaining. When things don't go our way, we suck it up and carry on.
7. We don't do traffic.
One of the greatest things about South Dakota is the lack of traffic jams.
8. We'll keep our cash, thank you very much.
With no state income tax, South Dakotans know how to keep our money where it belongs...in our pockets.
9. Honesty and integrity. It's who we are. Always.
We don't lock our doors here, and we'll give it to you straight.
10. Snow doesn't scare us.
Really, not much scares us. A few feet of snow certainly isn't going to faze us.
11. We take care of our own problems.
We love our country, and we like our government small and local. Here in South Dakota, we take care of our own...and we do it our own way.
