The Story of This Abandoned Place in Rock Hill, South Carolina is Truly Fascinating
Forgotten in the forest the Carhartt Mansion is being swallowed up by nature once again. This is the story of one of many abandoned places in South Carolina.
You don’t always have to snoop around in grimy corners of the cities to find cool abandoned places in South Carolina. Some of my favorite lost and forgotten structures can be found right in the forest which lends itself to the wild nature in once it is returning. There is a mansion found within the forest in Rock Hill and is closely related to a popular clothing brand we are all familiar with. Let's explore the ghosts of the past by taking a closer look at the old abandoned Carhartt Mansion.
The Rock Hill Riverwalk is a lovely little trail along the Catawba River, but it holds a forgotten secret. Old ruins stand tall among the trees in the forest, and other sections barely peek out from beyond the piles of leaves in the fall. This is what is left of the Carhartt Mansion.
If you are familiar with the brand of clothing, then you should instantly recognize the name because Hamilton Carhartt is the founder of your favorite work boots. This long-standing company has been making quality clothing for over a hundred years now, but it didn’t start in South Carolina. In Detroit, Michigan, Hamilton, in 1989, it started in humble beginnings with just two sewing machines and five employees. Eventually, the brand took off and provided good quality clothing for the hard-working middle class. The company continues to thrive today, but Hamilton’s life was cut short in 1937 by a fatal automobile accident.
Before his untimely demise, the gentleman behind the clothing brand had acquired a cotton mill in South Carolina. Although he lived in Michigan his second home was located in Rock Hill. After his death the property was vacant and although others eventually tried to reclaim it the efforts fell short. The place was left for ruin.
The property eventually gave way to the inevitable growth of the forest. Vines intertangled with the stone steps, walls crumbled, and the ground swallowed up the rest. Still, to this day, these mansion ruins can be explored. Take a trip to the Rock Hill Riverwalk and explore the winding trail system that follows the Catawba River.
This old home was rather impressive back in the day which makes the ruins especially fun to explore. The bones of the structure invoke your imagination as you try to picture what it once was. The ghosts of the past echo through the broken-down structure when you visit, beckoning you for a closer look.
If you are up for a little exploring some abandoned places in South Carolina, then head to Rock Hill to see the ruins of this old estate. The Carharrt Mansion is well worth the trip to explore the long-forgotten connection this clothing brand had in the South. I would recommend getting the AllTrails app for your travels to navigate the multiple pathways through the forest when you go. I think knowing the story of these forgotten places helps to put into context something you might otherwise just stumble upon in the woods. So armed with knowledge, enjoy the abandoned ruins.
