This Charming Oregon College Town Is a Must-Visit in the Fall
McMinnville is a must-visit for anyone who wants to visit a charming college town that shines brightest in the fall.
In the United States, autumn for college students typically means a return to campus, football games in oversized stadiums, fall colors highlighting courtyards between classrooms, overzealous Halloween party fans, and pumpkin-flavored everything making an appearance in on-campus cafes. Although there are always outliers, college campuses are usually built in a way that students don’t often have to leave the grounds to be able to survive the semester.
Unless students go to school in a major city or on the East Coast, those who do leave campus are typically greeted by a surrounding college town built up around/for the college. Some of these towns can be beautiful in their own way and fun to visit in the fall, but lack a certain charm that a longer preexisting history can instill.

So, where can you find this kind of college town charm on the West Coast? Say hello to Linfield College and the beautiful city of McMinnville. This city sits squarely in the middle of Oregon’s famous Willamette Valley, best known for farming and for wine production (Pinot Noir is said to grow better here than virtually anywhere else on earth). European colonizers arrived on the land that would become McMinnville in the 1840s, but the town wasn’t fully planned out until the 1850s. Then, in 1876, the city was officially incorporated. Remnants of this history can be seen all throughout the town, but especially on the main street (Third Street) and the Linfield campus.
In 2025, McMinnville’s Third Street was voted as one of the best main streets in the entire country and has often been referred to as “Oregon’s favorite main street.” Why? This is because the street has been functioning since the 1800s and still retains dozens of original buildings that have been updated on the inside to reflect modern needs, but have maintained their original visual appeal. This street has a little of everything, but is especially brilliant in the fall, with horse-drawn carriages, beautiful foliage, and multiple events for the season, often surrounding the local farms and wineries and their harvests.

The Linfield campus was first created in 1849, and its oldest existing building (the Pioneer building) dates back to 1882. The grounds clearly focus on keeping the area rooted in nature, with trees, fields of grass, fountains, and flowers dotted all over campus and around the striking red-brick buildings that dominate the forefront of the school. In the autumn, this school, although small, also boasts the classic college fall stereotypes with football games and tailgates, harvest-ready flavors, and vivid warm colors (although, it is the Pacific Northwest, so the ever-present green will always be part of the scene).

Every end of this town is surrounded by either farmland or vineyards, cementing the fact that when the leaves change, students will undoubtedly get some of the freshest food possible, as well as have their pick of the litter for wineries. But, for those who aren’t fans of wine, the city also has a large number of breweries (a must for any college town, of course). Clearly, when looking for autumnal collegiate activities, food and drink, foliage, spirit, and charm, there’s no better place on the West Coast than McMinnville!
