Government Island is a 1,760-acre island in the Columbia River just north of Portland. Interstate 205 crosses the island, but there is locked fencing along the highway, so the only way anyone can access the island is by boat.

Historical records tell us that Lewis and Clark stopped here in 1805. Since then, it was used by the U.S. military to grow hay in the 1850s, and a few families farmed and lived there for years after that. In 1999, Oregon Parks and Recreation turned it into a park.

Government Island has 15 miles of shoreline, and many boaters just pull their boats up onto the mostly sandy shore.

However, there are two docks and a floating tie-up on the north side of the island if you prefer.
