We all know New Orleans is one of the best cities in the country. The food, the history, the people... there are so many things to consider when factoring in what makes New Orleans unique, it's no wonder why we are a top tourist destination. Here are nine reasons why New Orleans is one of the most unique cities in America.
1. The food
Why is New Orleans so popular? Well, here's one ingredient that makes it stand out: People travel from all over the country to try our unique cuisine, and chefs spend years learning from some of the best in the industry. From gumbo to beignets, our food simply can’t be beaten, and it's one of the main reasons why New Orleans is the most unique city in the U.S.
2. The French Quarter
From an architectural standpoint, it’s absolutely beautiful. The Spanish and French style architecture mixed with creole cottages is part of what makes the quarter so special. Of course, the tourist appeal is Bourbon Street, and we can’t argue—it’s pretty unique.
3. Mardi Gras
When people think of New Orleans, generally one of two things come to mind: Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras. While we New Orleanians know that there’s so much more to this city than that, you’ve got to admit, Mardi Gras might be the number one reason why New Orleans is so popular.
4. The Saints
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they are a huge part of this city’s vibrant spirit. Who Dat!
5. The music
We have access to live music at so many venues, bars, and restaurants that you just can’t find anywhere else. Not only in venues, but just walk around the French Quarter and you’re bound to hear some amazing music from talented street performers. And then there are the many New Orleans festivals that are centered around music, like Jazzfest which draws in thousands of folks from all over the globe.
6. The festivals
French Quarter Fest, Jazzfest, Seafood Festival, we could go on and on. We have so many festivals in New Orleans that it’s hard to keep track. Starting in the spring and lasting until late fall, there’s a festival happening just about every weekend, and it’s glorious.
7. Our cemeteries
We are so used to them, but they really are a unique part of New Orleans. These hauntingly beautiful tombs are so uniquely New Orleans. Sure, some of them are haunted, but that's part of what makes New Orleans unique.
8. The art
We have so many talented artists in New Orleans. What’s even better, is that no one loves New Orleans artists more than New Orleanians. You can walk into any home in New Orleans and we'd bet you’d find at least one piece by a local artist.
9. This symbol
We don’t know that there’s any other city in the country that identifies with a symbol as much as New Orleanians identify with the fleur de lis. The fleur de lis has a long history with New Orleans, but after Hurricane Katrina, it became a popular sign of rebuilding, community, and perseverance. You can’t go two blocks without seeing this iconic symbol either on a business, street sign, or someone’s shirt. Or a tattoo!
