There are dozens of charming small towns in New Mexico to explore. While many of these small towns are named after Spanish and Native American words and people, others may make you scratch your head. Pie Town, New Mexico, is one of these towns. Located along Highway 60 in Catron County, this is one town that is sweet and fascinating.

Why Is Pie Town, New Mexico, Called Pie Town?

Welcome to Pie Town! This is actually not a town but an unincorporated community with approximately 200 residents. Native Americans lived in the area of present-day Pie Town for centuries. In the past several years, Ancestral Puebloan and Acoma pottery, an axe head, petrified wood, and even fossilized bones have been found in the area.

It wasn’t until the 1920s when present-day Pie Town was actually established, and at the time, it was a popular stopping place during cattle and sheep drives. In the 1920s, Clyde Norman established a shop in the area to provide supplies for travelers, but he was also well-known for making dried apple pies. Word quickly spread about the delicious pies in the community, and people came from all over to take a bite.

What To Do in Pie Town Today

When you visit today, you'll immediately notice the highlight of the town is still pies. You can stop at Pie Town Pie Co., formerly known as Pie-O-Neer, to enjoy a wide variety of homemade pies. You will find a large assortment of pies at this legendary bakery, and you can enjoy a slice, a whole pie, or even cupcake-size pies as well. All pies are made without preservatives, and vegan, gluten-free, buttermilk, and sugar-free options are available.

If you are willing to take a short drive outside of town, you’ll find peace, quiet, and extraordinary natural features. Explore the town of Quemado or visit the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. We particularly love to hit the trails, and the nearby Lava Falls Trail is an excellent option. Located in the El Malpais National Monument, this loop trail is just over one mile but is considered moderate in difficulty. While flat, the terrain can be uneven and rocky. Plus, there is no shade, so you’ll want to come fully prepared for this adventure.

The Annual Pie Festival Keeps the Tradition Alive

Every September, people from all over come to this small town in New Mexico for the annual Pie Festival. This festival is held to raise money for the town and not only features all types of incredible pies but there are activities like a fun run, raffles, a Pie Queen and Pie King contest, and more.
