I doubt many of us were around 100 years ago, but luckily, cameras were! It's so interesting to see what New Jersey looked like throughout the last century, and how much things have changed. Viewing the following photos is kind of like entering a time machine, you can almost imagine what life was like. Do you think things were simpler, or more of a struggle?
1. Halloween in Lakewood circa 1918.
With the holiday rapidly approaching, what better way to start this post? These costumes are much less creepy than other vintage costumes I've seen!
2. Lakehurst circa 1917.
A Ford Model T, snapped near Camp Dix.
3. A young biker circa 1917.
This photo was likely taken in or near Elizabeth.
4. Atlantic City circa 1930.
This stunning architectural work is the Traymore Hotel. Some of you may remember it, though it was demolished in 1972.
5. Grover Cleveland in Princeton circa 1900.
President Grover Cleveland sits in his study at Westland Mansion in Princeton.
6. Roseville Avenue in Newark circa 1890.
Taken shortly before the railroad tracks in the area were depressed.
7. Edgewater circa 1930.
Now filled with luxury condo complexes, Edgewater was once a very industrial area.
8. Broadway in Camden circa 1935.
Labor Union protesters during the Great Depression.
9. Hoboken Terminal circa 1910.
This photo was taken shortly after the terminal was built. Much remains the same!
10. Paterson circa 1902.
Taken after the Paterson fire of 1902 at the intersection of Broadway and Main.
11. Route 1 in Mercer County circa 1904.
Can you believe this is Route 1???
12. The Atlantic City Boardwalk circa 1917.
It's incredible to see how much the boardwalk has changed, though you'll likely still see plenty of Coca-Cola! Note the advertisement encouraging beach-goers to conserve food, very common during WWI.
13. Newark circa 1913.
Taken during the historic suffrage march from New York to Washington.
14. Ringoes Train Station circa 1915.
Taken almost exactly 100 years ago!
15. Woodrow Wilson in Long Branch, 1916.
He is shown here accepting the Democratic nomination for president.
16. Trenton circa 1918.
Taken at the intersection of State and Broad Streets.
