10 Photos You’ll Only Understand If You Hail From New Hampshire

New Hampshire locals have unique traditions and places that may seem unusual to outsiders.

It can be said that folks from New Hampshire are an unusual bunch. If you're from one of our neighboring states, you may feel very strongly about this! In keeping with hearty New England tradition, New Hampshirites do things their own way. Some of those things may seem weird if you aren't from here, but here are a few that will be very familiar (or, if you're like me, have learned about after moving here) to New Hampshire locals.

1. Weirs Beach

Yeah, but that's only what the tourists call it. For the locals, this popular destination on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee will always be known as "The Weirs."

2. The Old Man Of The Mountain

Even without the famous profile visible, as it fell from Cannon Mountain in 2003, visitors still come to imagine what it looked like. Hey, that's what photos of New Hampshire are for!

3. New Hampshire Liquor and Wine Outlets

Yes, the state's famous liquor stores are where you need to go to buy any booze that isn't beer. And they are open on Sundays!

4. Traffic Jams On I-93

A familiar site on the state's highways is trying to get anywhere on a weekend when the roads are crowded with out-of-staters. Especially those from Massachusetts.

5. Canobie Lake Park

Many of us remember this amusement park in Salem from our childhoods. More than a century after it opened, it's still going strong for future generations.

6. Benson's Wild Animal Farm

Growing up in New Hampshire, you probably went here when it was open. This is another throwback to when we were kids, but this former zoo and amusement park in Hudson is now a municipal park.

7. Mud Season

Normally there are four seasons in a year. But here in New Hampshire we also have a tie for a fifth (see below) — mud season.

8. Black Fly Season

It isn't summer in New Hampshire without black fly season, which peaks in June. Fortunately, these little fiends don't last long.

9. Ready, Set, BOOM

Yup, New Hampshire is a state where you can walk into specialty shops to buy incendiary devices that will likely annoy the neighbors.

10. Shorts In The Winter

We enjoy our winters here, but as soon as that first warm day arrives, many of us jump ahead to spring... no matter how much snow is still around. It's all just a part of life in New Hampshire!

We are a quirky state, and New Hampshire locals can be an odd lot at times. Some facts about New Hampshire sound too far-fetched to believe, but there are also some unusual and interesting places to visit.
