One of my favorite ways to learn about a state is by digging into the history and the strange facts that make it special, and let me tell you, the Cornhusker State has more to offer than meets the eye.

1. Kool-Aid Was Invented in Nebraska

Hastings, Nebraska, is the official birthplace of Kool-Aid. Edwin Perkins, the inventor of Kool-Aid, developed the drink mix in Hastings in 1927. Originally, Perkins developed a liquid concentrate he called “Fruit Smack,” but to save on shipping and broken bottles, he dehydrated the liquid into a powder that we know today as Kool-Aid. In 1931, the facility in Hastings where Kool-Aid was produced became too small, and the company moved to Chicago.

2. The Largest Indoor Rainforest in North America is in Omaha

Omaha is home to the world's largest indoor rainforest, located at the Henry Doorly Zoo. The Lied Jungle is truly extraordinary, as this massive indoor rainforest is 60,000 square feet, 8 stories tall, and showcases rainforests from South America, Asia, and Africa. More than 90 animal species live within this indoor rainforest, and during a visit, you’ll enjoy unique features like waterfalls, elevated walkways, rope bridges, underwater viewing windows, and more.

3. Arbor Day Began in Nebraska

Nebraska is the birthplace of Arbor Day, a holiday dedicated to tree planting. J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska journalist and politician, initiated Arbor Day in 1872. This official U.S. holiday is observed on the last Friday in April.

4. Nebraska is Home to the World's Largest Ball of Stamps

The Leon Myers Stamp Center in Boys Town, Nebraska, is where you can view the world’s largest ball of stamps. This massive ball weighs approximately 600 pounds and is 32 inches in diameter. It contains approximately 4.6 million stamps.

5. The 911 System Was Made in Nebraska

The first-ever 911 call in the U.S. was made in Haleyville, Alabama, but the system itself was developed in Lincoln.

6. McCook is the Real Home of the Dollar

The term "dollar bill" was first coined in McCook, Nebraska, when the local banks issued the country's first $1 bill in 1887.

7. Carhenge is Nestled in Alliance, Nebraska

Alliance, Nebraska, is home to Carhenge, a unique art installation replicating England's Stonehenge using old cars. This unique roadside attraction is made out of 38 vintage vehicles, all painted grey. It was created by Jim Reinders in 1987 to honor his father.

8. Nebraska is the Only State With a Unicameral State Legislature

Nebraska is home to the only single-house state legislature in the U.S. Plus, it is also the smallest legislative branch of any state, with only 49 members.

9. Nebraska is the Only “Triply Landlocked” State

Nebraska is surrounded by six states, and to reach any ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico, from anywhere in the Cornhusker State, you must pass through at least three other states to reach the water.

10. The Largest Sand Dune Formation is Found in Nebraska

The Nebraska Sandhills, located in the northern part of the Cornhusker State, is 20,000 square miles, making it the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere. It is believed these dunes were formed between 10,000 and 3,500 years ago by sediment blown in from the Rocky Mountains. The sediment is now permanently in place due to the prairie grasses.
