3 Nebraska Tourist Spots I Tried to Hate (But Ended Up Loving)

These Lincoln, Nebraska, spots are popular with tourists and well deserving of the attention.

Although visiting every state in the U.S. is something I'd like to do, there is little rhyme or reason as to why they happen in any particular order. In fact, it wasn't until 2023 that I visited Nebraska for the first time, since one of my best friends lives there. It was then that I learned a little about Lincoln, Nebraska. The following are easily three of the must-see attractions in the state, all in the cozy confines of the charming capital city.

1. Nebraska State Capitol

As a born and raised Wisconsinite, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Dairy State's capitol building, so much so that I included it in my guide to a day in the city. That said, I always enjoy seeing state capitol buildings when I visit a capital city for the first time, and Nebraska's does not disappoint. What I loved was how different it is from most others you're likely to see. When it was built from 1922 to 1932, it was the first vernacular state capitol, a vast departure from the more typical Neoclassical style seen elsewhere at the time. Even if you visit the outside, you can appreciate the immense detail and artistic touches throughout the building.

2. Historic Haymarket

A stop in the Historic Haymarket district is on our Ultimate Nebraska Bucket List, and it makes sense as to why. At the same time, we've also called it a hidden gem, so perhaps not enough people know about it. Although it is far from the only American city with a haymarket area, this historic part of the city is an excellent way to spend a few hours. While it has the aesthetic of an old Midwestern downtown, it is full of modern amenities like hip restaurants and shops, along with plenty of vintage vibes. As someone who can never get enough dreamy photos of brick buildings, Historic Haymarket is my version of the kid in a candy store analogy.

3. Lincoln Children's Zoo

I'll be frank, I wasn't sure what to make of the Lincoln Children's Zoo. I had never been to a standalone zoo with the word "children" in it before, so I genuinely thought this attraction would be geared exclusively to kids and families. While there are certainly elements of that at this zoo, it is also full of things that adults without children can also enjoy. There are more than 400 animals that call the zoo home, and it is a blast to walk through, especially if you check out The Secret Jungle, a climbing structure near a spider monkey exhibit. If you need an excuse to check it out, it's right next to The Mill Coffee & Tea, which served the tastiest latte I've ever had at a zoo. I know that's a niche claim to fame, but as a frequent zoo visitor and coffee lover, it's worth mentioning.

What other destinations in Lincoln would you add to this list? I'd love to hear your recommendations.
