Tupelo Hardware Company has been in business for over 90 years! But its age isn’t its only distinguishing characteristic. The decades-old store has another claim to fame – it’s where Elvis purchased his first guitar. Still a functioning store, a visit to Tupelo Hardware Company is like stepping back in time. Take a look:
Tupelo Hardware Company is housed in a historic 3-story brick building on Main Street.
A city staple, Tupelo Hardware Company was founded in 1926! (It was originally located in a building across the street from its current location.)
Not only has the store been located in the same spot for nearly a century, but since day one, it’s been run solely by the Boothe family as well as a handful of longtime employees.
A true blast from the past, the store hasn’t changed much over the years.
Like a mercantile store from years long gone, its shelves are stocked with an assortment of merchandise.
A varied inventory isn’t all that fills the store, though.
There are lots of nods to the store’s most famous patron, Elvis Presley.
As the story goes, Gladys Presley brought her son Elvis to the store in January 1945 to buy him a birthday gift.
It’s said that young Elvis initially wanted a rifle, before finally settling on a guitar. Keeping with tradition, the store still sells guitars to this day.
Proud of its past, Tupelo Hardware Company welcomes Elvis fans to visit the store during normal business hours.
Brimming with history, nostalgic charm, and great merchandise, Tupelo Hardware Company is a shopping destination like no other.
