As it turns out, we Mississippians have some habits that out-of-towners find a bit strange. While these things may seem completely normal to us and we couldn’t imagine life any other way, residents of other states just don’t get it. From food to traditions, here are nine things only people from Mississippi do.
1. Peanuts IN Coke
This local favorite may seem strange to out-of-towners but it has been around for years, and, unless you’ve tried it, you don’t know what you’re missing.
2. Boiled Peanuts
Aside from soaking peanuts in Coke, Mississippians also like their peanuts seasoned and boiled – another treat outsiders just don’t get. They're such a great part of living in Mississippi!
3. Peculiar Sports Traditions
Between Ole Miss fans screaming "hotty toddy" and Mississippi State fans ringing cowbells, the state is filled with unusual sports traditions that, to this day, no one is really sure how they got started. It's just a part of life in Mississippi!
4. Buying Food From Roadside Vendors
From local fisherman selling their catches to farmers selling fresh fruits and vegetables to merchants selling boiled peanuts, buying food from a stranger's vehicle on the side of the road is completely acceptable. (Okay, when you say it out loud, it does sound a little unusual.)
5. Year Round Iced Tea
People from Mississippi will sip on iced tea even if it is the middle of winter. Outsiders may think it’s strange but they’ve clearly never tried Mississippi iced tea.
6. Creative Homemade Remedies
Toothpaste on ant bites? Oil on a car’s fender? Others may be unaware of these quick fixes but Mississippians are pretty inventive when it comes to homemade remedies.
7. Chocolate Gravy
A common culinary creation in Mississippi, chocolate gravy for breakfast is the best, especially when served over hot, homemade biscuits.
8. Koolickles
Whoever thought Kool-Aid flavored pickles would make a good snack? Residents of the Delta, that’s who! And the unusual pairing seems to have pleased a lot of taste buds.
9. Exhibit Hospitality to EVERYONE
Others may find our unwavering, unbiased hospitality unusual since they’re not used to it, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! So whether you’re a lifelong friend or a mere acquaintance, a Mississippian will greet you with a warm smile and always make you feel welcome.
