Here Are 14 Things Everyone In Maine Absolutely Loves
Maine offers a unique blend of serene landscapes, local foods, and historic charm that fosters deep state pride among its residents.
Mainers (or Mainahs, Mainuhs, Mainiacs - whatever you call us) are brimming with state pride. From our wilderness to our mountains to our coastal lighthouses, we could supply you with an endless list of reasons why life in Maine is better than anywhere else. But, our pride goes beyond our geography and topography. In addition to the land, living in Maine comes with a whole lot of perks that are unique to our slice of the East Coast! We love the food, the drinks, and the families that make this state feel like home. Here are 14 of the best things about Maine.
1. Peace and quiet.
Maine is home to the most serene sunsets you'll ever see. Folks move here for the quiet and those from here stay to hold onto it. If you're looking for a place to take a deep breath and relax, Maine is for you.
2. Whoopie Pies!
It's our official state treat, after all. And, as the only state with an official treat, we better appreciate it.
3. The road less traveled.
Mainers have never seen a dirt road we wouldn't consider traveling. The best adventures wait at the end of a road less taken and, in Maine, there are plenty of those.
4. Italians.
Nope, we don't mean folks from Italy. We mean the sandwich. And, if you call it by any other name you might as well be from Mass.
5. Vanity Plates.
One drive through Maine and you'll understand. We have so, so many. And they typically turn a boring drive into something much more entertaining. Do you have one? Tell us about it!
6. Local Brews.
From Allagash to Shipyard and all the Sea Dogs in between, we not only pride ourselves in the ever-growing number of local breweries we have but we also really like them! According the financial services website SmartAsset, Portland is the top city for beer drinkers in America. But amazing breweries can be found all over the state!
7. Real Food.
We mean the kind you get from a place where they always know what you want. We love true food and we love the community that catches it, grows it, produces it and serves it!
8. Snowy Mornings
You can complain all you want, but there's something deep down within us that loves the beauty of a snowy Maine winter's morning. If you don't feel that way, double check your birth certificate. Maybe you were born just a bit south?
9. L.L. Bean
Sure, it might be a bit pricey at times, but at the end of the day they're a local business that keeps us warm in the winter and having fun in the summer.
10. Allen’s Coffee Brandy.
Well, actually, the only time I've ever seen anyone love this stuff is right before closing time at a bar in Vinalhaven. But, regardless, the numbers don't lie. On a list of Maine's bestselling liquors, the big bottle of the "champagne of Maine" comes in first. Third, fourth and ninth on the list? Smaller bottles of Allen's.
11. The fact that we're a still bit of a secret.
While it's true that more and more people from away are coming north to call Maine home, we still have areas that remain relatively untouched. Where else can you spend a day kayaking and simply walk a few steps home?
12. Moxie
Love it or hate it, it's another Maine original and there's nothing a Mainah loves more than a Maine original!
13. Reny's
Reny's appears in a lot of our articles, but that's simply a testament to the importance the retailer plays in our lives. It's a Maine Adventure, after all!
14. Singing!
Well, maybe just one song: The Counties Song! Once you've started thinking about it, you won't be able to get it out of your head. That must count for something. "The 16 counties in our state are Cumberland and Franklin..." Can you sing the rest?!
Growing up in Maine is something special! What do YOU love most about our state? Let us know! Feel free to share your best memories and photos with us as well.
Life in the Far East has certainly changed over the decades, but we wouldn't want to live anywhere else. For a double-dose of state pride and nostalgia, pay a visit to some of the most charming historic towns in Maine. Or, how about a unique historical park?
While you're in the spirit, book a stay at a historic cottage on the water - built all the way back in 1896!
