11 Beliefs Every Louisiana Native Agrees On
Louisianans have unique cultural practices and preferences that they passionately defend, from their terminology to their food and sports.
Living in Louisiana means you’ll come across a few cultural speed bumps that you may not experience anywhere else. Some of these things are very near and dear to every Louisianan, and we will defend them fiercely no matter what. From our unique lingo to our food to our sporting events, and more, here are 11 of the most controversial hills to die on in Louisiana. They are a true depiction of what life in Louisiana is like for locals.
1. Everything Is a “Coke” – Because That’s Just How We Say It
In other regions of the country, it’s pop or soda – but down here, everything is a Coke. It’s just one of those unspoken rules that outsiders quickly learn.
"Can I have a Coke?"
"Sure, what kind?"
"Sprite."
2. Around Here, We Measure Distance in Time, Not Miles
And there’s a good chance there will be some kind of unique mile marker in the form of an old shed, a bizarre tree, or some other unusual landmark to be on the lookout for. Louisiana’s winding bayou roads make it easier to judge distance by time than by miles. "Go down the road about 15 minutes and take the second left after the mailbox shaped like a bass."
3. Need Directions? Just Follow the Water
Speaking of directions, it’s not uncommon for Louisianians to use water as a navigational tool. This is especially true in the Greater New Orleans area. If you’re not from here, it takes a minute to get used to it!
"Heading towards the lake"
"Go towards the river."
4. Crawfish Season Is the Best Season
It obviously trumps hurricane season, and sno-ball season is a close second, but what really pushes crawfish season to the top spot is that it overlaps with king cake season. Locals gather at crawfish boils every weekend to celebrate spring with good food and good company.
5. Let’s Be Honest – Every Louisianian Has a King Cake Dealer and Knife
Everyone has a king cake knife that sits in the box until said king cake is eaten. At this point, it will be washed and then wait for a new king cake to arrive on the counter. King cakes are a Mardi Gras staple, and every household has its go-to bakery.
6. Po’boys Are Better Than Subs, Grinders, or Hoagies – It’s Just Facts
Po’boys are better than subs, grinders, or hoagies. Dressed, of course. With a stack of napkins. Whether it’s roast beef, shrimp, or oyster, every bite of a po’boy tells you you’re in Louisiana. As a visitor, be sure to ask for extra gravy.
7. First Cold Snap? Yep, That Means It’s Gumbo Weather
The first cold snap means it’s gumbo weather. And kitchens all across the Pelican State are starting their roux. The most significant divide here (other than seafood or chicken and sausage) is whether you are putting potato salad in yours. Or are you team rice?
8. Down Here, Football Isn’t a Game... It’s a Way of Life

Football is life in Louisiana. This is true whether it’s high school, college, or the pros. Who dat! (Also, beat ‘bama.) Football, as Louisiana's favorite game, brings the whole community together, making it practically a second religion.
9. The Marching Band Matters Just as Much as the Team on the Field
The marching band is just as important as the team playing. And the drum majors take their roles very seriously. From Southern University to Grambling State, Louisiana’s marching bands are famous across the United States for their energy and showmanship.
10. Beignets Just Hit Different – Especially with Powdered Sugar on Your Shirt

Are you the kind of person who walks away from the table spotless? Well, you're doing it wrong. When in Louisiana, that fine layer of powdered sugar is the locals' badge of honor. And of course, the mess is half the fun.
11. If You Know, You Know – Tony’s Goes on Absolutely Everything
Tony’s goes on everything… and I mean everything. Sprinkle it on your eggs in the morning, your Bloody Mary at lunch, and on your gumbo at night. This spice blend makes everything better.
