Built in 1934, the Plaza Theatre Is One of the Most Remarkable Historic Sites in Kentucky
The building is nearly 100 years old, but it still hosts some of the most exciting performances in Kentucky.
There are so many reasons to plan a trip to Glasgow-Barren County, Kentucky, but there's one that will appeal to history enthusiasts and music lovers alike: the Historic Plaza Theatre. It's located in the heart of Glasgow and it's been around since 1934 — nearly 100 years of stories, performances, shows, and community.
It all began in 1915, which was the year Bruce Aspley followed in his father's footsteps and purchased his own theatre called the Dixie. After purchasing the Lyon Opera House in downtown Glasgow, Aspley had enough funds to finance the Plaza Theatre. By 1935, the theatre was fully operational, and it even offered some live music as additional entertainment. Acts included country music stars Minnie Pearl, Loretta Lynn, the Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, Porter Wagoner, and Dolly Parton.
The Plaza was sold in 1973 to the Slinker Family, who showed movies and rented the space out to local groups and performers. Due to economic stresses, the theatre was forced to close in the 1990s, but it wouldn't be down for long. In 2001, the theatre was purchased by the City of Glasgow and renovations began, largely spearheaded by Mayor Charlie Honeycutt.
Today, the Plaza Theatre boasts 1,020 seats and hosts nationally acclaimed musicians as well as local artists. The space also hosts live theatre, including plays and musicals from The Far Off Broadway Players, and other unique arts-related events. The goal of the theatre is simple yet powerful: to bring some of the country's best entertainment to Glasgow. Attending a show at this historic theatre, you can't help but feel the history.
When you visit today, you'll agree that the building's past is tangible yet it has been invigorated with fresh energy. As one reviewer noted, it's "everything a venue used to be." Tickets are affordable, cash is still accepted, the staff is friendly, and the acoustics are incredible. Because of its classic theatre layout, any seat in the building is a great one. When you need a refreshment, be sure to stop by the concessions stand for classic offerings such as candy, popcorn, or drinks.
But don't just take our word for it; go see a show for yourself! You'll be so glad that you did. There are plenty of nearby places to stay, and so much to do in the area, from hiking trails to fantastic restaurants, cave tours, and more.
