8 Strong Beliefs Kentucky Natives Stand By
Kentucky life is characterized by its unique traditions, strong local pride, and iconic cuisine.
Life in Kentucky is pretty darn good. That’s because Kentucky people are the best people. We’re warm and welcoming, with a culture that celebrates history, music and cuisine. But some may think Kentuckians are a bit strange, whether it’s because everything shuts down for Derby Day or for just a dusting of snow. There are parts of Kentucky life that we’re immensely proud of, even if they might seem a bit silly to outsiders. These things are hills to die on in Kentucky, and we bet you’ll find yourself shaking your head in agreement as you read along.
1. Let's Just Get This Out of the Way First: Kentucky Is a Proud Southern State
Kentucky identifies as a decidedly Southern. While places like Alabama and Mississippi may disagree, we're all about "y'all" and sweet tea here in the Bluegrass. From our hospitality to our traditions, that Southern spirit is woven into everyday life.
2. This ROYGBIV of Drinks Is Not Soda
It's POP. Not Soda. Not Soda Pop. Just pop. This is not up for debate.
3. Our Food Is Iconic and Unique...
We have several dishes that will leave you wanting more.Burgoo stew, fried chicken, hot browns…these are inextricable parts of Kentucky culture. Whether you grew up with them or are trying them for the first time, they’re the kind of meals that stay with you long after the last bite.
4. And So Is Our Bourbon
If cooking is our love language, then bourbon is our lifeblood. We're the whiskey capital of the world, and we're immensely proud of that. According to History.com, "the Bluegrass State produces and ages approximately 95 percent of the world’s bourbon whiskey."
5. We're All About Fall...

It doesn't matter if the thermostat reads 85 degrees fahrenheit, we'll be decked out in the season's finest gear. From wearing our flannel and cowboy boots to carrying a PLS in hand, we're committed. Apple picking and pumpkin patches? Sign us up.
6. But Winter Is Debatable

Driving in the snow is not our forte, and we do our best to avoid it. According to WHAS, we average between 10-20 inches of snow per year. Louisville, KY, sees the most snow, averaging 13.4 inches.
7. Three Words: The Kentucky Derby

The Derby is basically a state-wide holiday. From the mint juleps to the elaborate fashions, this prestigious horse race has been the biggest event of the Kentucky socialite calendar since 1875. Nearly 150,000 spectators make their way to Churchill Downs for the big day, and we look forward to it every year.
8. Speaking of the Derby, Have You Seen the Hats?

We absolutely use this event as a way to dress to the nines, donning bowties and fascinator hats with gusto! Fashion at the Derby has evolved from silk gowns and bonnets in the 1800s to the colorful pastel couture dresses and skirt suits seen today. It's always a matter of who's who and who are you are wearing at the Derby. While the horses are the main event, the stylish outfits are a close second.
We have a lot of pride here in the Bluegrass State, and sure, we might be a bit odd at times, times. But these are hills every Kentuckian is willing to die on — figuratively, of course, because you definitely won’t catch us out driving in a snowstorm.
