Throughout history, Kentucky has seen many conflicts and battles and there is evidence of those events to this day. Our state has preserved battlefields, forts, and other remnants from times Kentucky experienced battle, war, and heartache. It is fascinating to learn from the past and visit these spots today and one of the most incredible historic sites is Fort Duffield. Located just south of Louisville in West Point, you can explore the remnants of this 1800s fort in Kentucky and also visit the cemetery where many were buried after dying during the fort's construction.
Fort Duffield is located south of Louisville near the confluence of the Ohio River and Salt River.
As an important and significant historic site in our state, it has many stories to tell. With a great location for an afternoon trip from Louisville or other surrounding areas, this underrated site should not be missed.
Fort Duffield is "the largest earthen work Civil War fortress in Kentucky" and it's amazing what you can still see today.
The building of this fort in Kentucky began in late 1861 and for months, soldiers moved mounds of dirt to construct a wall, as shown above. You can explore this area at the site today.
There are many ways to experience Fort Duffield, thanks to the passionate volunteers who work to maintain the property.
There are pathways that lead to views of the river, as well as information posted throughout the property on this history of the area.
One of the most interesting parts of Fort Duffield is the uphill hike to reach the historic cemetery.
While it is a bit of a climb up the hill, it is absolutely worth it for the historical significance and the views of the valley.
During the construction of the fort, 61 men died and they are laid to rest on Memorial Hill.
It is a reverant place to reflect on our state's past. If you look on the right side of the photo above, you'll see there are benches and an overlook on the hill where you can rest and take it all in.
Be sure to spend time exploring all of the property, as there are historic features throughout.

There are both hiking and mountain bike trails on the property, so you can enjoy recreation along with the history.
But the history is what makes this fort in Kentucky so special. Fort Duffield may not receive much attention, but it is an incredible place to visit that is filled with remnants of our state's past.
