The One Thing to Do in Kansas Before the End of the Year

The Gary L. Haller Trail and Mill Creek Loop is an easy hike located in Shawnee Mission Park, Shawnee, Kansas. This two-mile hike is perfect for winter bird-watching or spending time outdoors with loved ones.

The holiday season means a lot of delicious food and fun times with loved ones. We cozy up to fires or around a TV, watching our favorite movies and laughing at the same jokes we've had for years. Yet something that is often sorely missing, at least in my life, is getting outside. That's why the one thing you should do in Kansas before 2026 arrives is enjoy the outdoors. One of the best ways to do that is to find an easy hike or walking trail so the group can go at their own pace and enjoy the scenery. One of the best places to do that is along the Gary L. Haller Trail and the Mill Creek Loop in Shawnee Mission Park, Shawnee, Kansas.

The easy, two-mile Gary L. Haller Trail and Mill Creek Loop offers paved paths and minimal incline. Without much climbing, the trail allows for casual strolls, perfect for post-family meals or a quick morning jaunt. You can do the whole loop in one fell swoop, or stop to meander along Mill Creek or Shawnee Mission Lake. Leashed dogs are also allowed, so no need to leave your best furry pal at home!

Because my grandmother was a big fan of birds, I've also become accustomed to them myself. I feel this most in the holiday season when I miss her, which is why I'm always up for a wintry birding adventure. Thanks to the 120-acre lake and other types of habitats in the Shawnee Mission Park surrounding the loop trail, this is a terrific spot for birding and other wildlife spotting—even in winter. You could see some puffy house finches trying to stay warm in the snow, brown-headed cowbirds, or even bright red cardinals adding pops of color to the scenery. There are benches throughout the paved trail areas, so if you want to take a rest while looking for your bird friends, feel free! After all, a winter stroll can be as casual or as quick as you want it to be.

When you inevitably fall in love with the simplicity of this space and its dozens upon dozens of animals that call the park home, be sure you see other parks of Shawnee Mission Park in the warmer months, too. You can enjoy the different sites along the Orange Trail or bring your pup back for a dip at the park's dog-friendly beach. There is even an inclusive, all-abilities playground that keeps the park fun for everyone!

If you're familiar with the park, keep in mind that it has seasonal hours. From November 1 to February 28, the park (and its trails) are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (rather than the summer hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.) Even without those three extra nighttime hours, there is still plenty of time to sneak in a hike before your long winter's nap.
